Weather Underground Forecast for Thursday, May 23, 2013. A strong, large storm will continue making its way through the eastern third of the country on Thursday, producing more, active weather east of the Mississippi Valley. While the active weather is not likely to produce the severe thunderstorms that have greeted the country over the past several days, scattered thunderstorms will be likely, especially in the Southeast. In addition, moderate to occasionally heavy rain will move through the Northeast, followed by cool showers in the Ohio Valley and Upper Midwest.

Meanwhile, some moisture pushing into the Southern Plains could possibly instigate some severe thunderstorms in northern Texas and western Oklahoma. Due to this possibility, the Storm Prediction Center has issued a slight risk of severe weather in the area for Thursday. This means residents in the area should prepare as if severe weather will develop, making any necessary preparations to protect life and property.

Also, a seasonably strong low pressure system will linger over the Pacific Northwest today, allowing wet weather to continue in the area. While rain will be the overwhelming precipitation due to this storm, a few snow showers will be possible in the higher elevations of the Cascades.

Additionally, rain will also spread as far east as central Montana.

The Northeast will rise into the 70s and 80s, while the Southeast will see temperatures in the 80s and 90s. The Southern Plains will rise into the 80s and 90s, while the Southwest will see similar temperatures.

... On this date in weather history...

In 2008, a large wedge tornado developed about 9 miles south of
Quinter in Gove County kanasas and moved north, eventually
dissipating 2 miles southeast of park. This tornado caused extensive
damage to several homes, including EF4 damage to one home which was
completely destroyed. A car and a pickup truck were tossed or
bounced 200 yards at the residence. Nearby, two other homes suffered
extensive damage. This tornado caused two injuries, including the
driver of a vehicle which was thrown off Interstate 70, and a man
attempting to get into his storm cellar when he was struck by flying
debris.

In 2011, lightning struck the transmitter tower of kngn radio in
McCook, Nebraska. The station was off the air for several days
awaiting repairs to the main and backup power sources.
