Statement as of 11:59 AM CST on December 22, 2009 ... Winter Storm Watch remains in effect from Wednesday morning through Friday afternoon... A Winter Storm Watch remains in effect from Wednesday morning through Friday afternoon. * Timing: several waves of precipitation are possible with this storm system. The first starting Wednesday morning and has the potential to bring a mix of snow and freezing rain becoming all freezing rain... before possibly mixing with rain during Wednesday afternoon as temperatures warm to near or above freezing. Another round of precipitation is expected Wednesday evening and night with a mix bag again likely. The final round of precipitation will move in on Thursday and continue into Christmas day and will likely be mostly snow. * Snow accumulations: significant snow accumulations of 6 inches or more are possible... mainly from Thursday into Christmas. * Ice accumulations: significant ice accumulations from one tenth to one quarter of an inch or more are possible from Wednesday morning into Wednesday night. * Winds: the wind will be increasing Thursday... and strong winds should continue into Friday leading to some blowing and drifting of new snow. * Impacts: this system has the potential to produce significant impacts to travel from Wednesday into Friday. Along with significant snowfall and ice accumulations... strong winds will produce blowing and drifting snow leading to reduced visibilities. Due to the combination of the strong winds and ice accumulations... power outages will also be possible from the storm. Precautionary/preparedness actions... A Winter Storm Watch means that there is potential for significant snow... sleet... or ice accumulations that may impact travel. Continue to monitor the latest forecasts for updates. |
