Warnings and Notices

	Winter Storm Warning
Statement as of 1:46 PM CST on December 23, 2009 ... Winter Storm Warning now in effect until 6 PM CST Friday... The Winter Storm Warning is now in effect until 6 PM CST Friday. The blizzard watch is no longer in effect. * A combination some light freezing precipitation... periods of snow... and the development of high winds will produce winter storm conditions across south central Nebraska and north central through Christmas day. * Storm total snow amounts will be less than previously forecast... but still range from 3 to 9 inches. Snow will linger through early this evening. Additional snowfall in south central Nebraska today will be in the 1 to 3 inch range. Accumulating snow is possible Thursday... especially east of Highway 281... and then again on Friday. In both cases... an additional 1 to 3 inches is generally expected. * Light freezing drizzle will continue over north central Kansas tonight... and settle into south central Nebraska this evening. This will add another glaze of ice to outdoor surfaces and roads. * High winds will ramp up late tonight... and continue through Friday. Winds of 30 to 45 mph will be common Thursday and Friday. Gusts to 50 mph are possible. * Blowing and drifting snow will be a major problem... not just from falling snow... but also from the freshly fallen snow of today. Visibilities will be greatly reduced at times... with near white out conditions in some snow bands. In some areas... it is still likely Road crews could struggle keeping drift prone areas clear... and travel should be considered very hazardous at best through at least Christmas day. Travel could become become dangerous at times as the strong winds develop... and visibilities drop. Precautionary/preparedness actions... A Winter Storm Warning has been issued for the combination of snow... blowing snow... high winds... and overall winter storm conditions expected through the Christmas Holiday. Try to limit your travel to essential situations only. If you must travel... keep an extra flashlight... food... and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency.
