Special Weather Statement
Statement as of 2:46 PM CST on December 21, 2009
... Significant winter storm event possible Wednesday night through
Friday night...
An area of low pressure is expected to move into the Southern
Plains by Wednesday night. This low is forecast to track slowly
northeast... crossing Missouri and Iowa on its way to southern
Wisconsin by late Friday night. This low pressure track would result
in a wide swath of heavy snow across eastern Nebraska... eastern
South Dakota... northern Iowa and southern Minnesota. At this point
the Devils Lake region and the northern Red River valley appear to
be on the fringe of the heavy snow... while portions of southeast
North Dakota and west central Minnesota could see some heavier snow
amounts. Another issue to deal with is increasing wind speeds during
the storm. As the low passes to the southeast... north to northeast
winds are expected to increase on Thursday and remain gusty
through Friday night. The combination of snow and wind could make
travel nearly impossible over some areas of the Midwest.
Since this storm is still several days away... any shifts in the
track of the low could bring changes to where the heaviest snow
falls. Those planning travel to the south or east by mid to late
week need to monitor later forecasts on this potential winter storm
event.
