north of Cape Lookout to Hatteras Inlet...
... High threat of rip currents along the beaches north of Cape
Lookout through Friday...

The high surf advisory is now in effect until 4 am EST Friday.

Strong low pressure will move slowly northeast just off the coast
tonight. This will continue to produce breakers at or above 8 feet
from Cape Lookout north.

The onshore winds and building surf will create a high threat of
rip currents along the beaches through Friday.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A high surf advisory means that high surf will affect beaches in
the advisory area... producing dangerous rip currents and
localized beach erosion.

Rip currents are strong... narrow channels of water that flow out
to sea. If you become caught in a rip current... remain calm. Try
to swim on a course that is parallel to the beach until you get
away from the rip... then swim at an angle in to shore. Do not try
to swim back to shore directly against the rip... since it can
exhaust and even kill the strongest swimmer.

... Gusty winds over the region...

Strong low pressure along the coast is producing gusty north winds
over most of the area this afternoon. Occasional wind gusts of 35
to 40 mph can be expected through the afternoon hours. These winds
may blow down some trees due to the very wet ground.

a record rainfall of 3.99 inch(es) was set at New Bern NC yesterday.
This breaks the old record of 1.05 set in 1979.
