Weather Summary
Weather Underground Forecast for Sunday, February 12, 2012.

The East dries out on Sunday, but wet weather continues moving through the West. A trough of low pressure advances eastward over the Great Basin and Central Rockies, producing moderate snow showers over Utah and Colorado. Winter weather advisories have been issued for parts of western Colorado as snowfall accumulations may reach from 6 to 8 inches by Sunday evening. Most of Utah, western Wyoming, and northern New Mexico should see lighter snow showers with accumulation around 1 to 2 inches. The tail end of this trough will extend into western Texas, bringing snow and freezing rain showers into northwestern Texas. Precipitation from this system will move into the Texas Panhandle late Sunday into Monday morning. Winter storm warnings have been issued for the region as 3 to 5 inches of snow are possible, with ice accumulations from 0.10 to 0.30 inches by Sunday evening. This will cause dangerous roads and travel conditions.

Meanwhile, another trough of low pressure and associated cold front approach the West Coast on Sunday. This system will reach the coasts of the Pacific Northwest and northern California in the afternoon and evening hours, bringing more rain showers. Temperatures will remain cool over most of the West Coast as this system pushes clouds and moisture onshore.

In the East, a strong ridge of high pressure allows for dry, sunny, and cool weather to persist. This system creates strong flow from the north, pushing cold air into the Plains and Eastern Valleys. Expect highs to range in the 20s in the Midwest, while the Ohio River Valley and Tennessee Valleys will see highs in the 30s. Freeze advisories have been issued for the Gulf states as low temperatures will drop into the 20s Sunday night. Dangerous fire conditions spread over the Southeastern states due to high pressure creating a very dry airmas with strong winds.

Coastal Flood Advisory
Mobile & Email Alerts Statement as of 2:39 AM EST on February 12, 2012

... Coastal Flood Advisory remains in effect until 1 PM EST this
afternoon...

* location... sound side Outer Banks from Kitty Hawk to
Ocracoke... to Cedar Island.

* Coastal flooding... minor.

* Timing... through early this afternoon.

* Impacts... 1 to 2 foot water rises will result in minor coastal
flooding in areas exposed to northwest winds. Locally higher
water rises of 2 to 3 feet possible between Avon and Hatteras
Village.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A coastal Flood Advisory indicates that onshore winds and tides
will combine to generate flooding of low areas along the shore.

Wind Advisory
Mobile & Email Alerts Statement as of 10:05 AM EST on February 12, 2012

... Wind Advisory in effect until noon EST today...

The National Weather Service in Newport/Morehead City has issued
a Wind Advisory... which is in effect until noon EST today.

* Winds... northwest 25 to 35 mph with gusts up to 40 mph.

* Timing... through late morning.

* Impacts... gusty winds will adversely impact high profile
vehicles... and blow around loose objects such as garbage cans
and lawn furniture. Dead or weakened trees and small branches
may be blown down by the winds. Sporadic power outages are
possible.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A Wind Advisory means that sustained winds of 31 to 39 mph or
gusts in excess of 45 mph are expected. Winds this strong can
make driving difficult... especially for high profile vehicles.
Use extra caution.

Special Statement
Mobile & Email Alerts Statement as of 7:22 AM EST on February 12, 2012

... Increased fire danger today...

Very dry air coupled with gusty northwest winds will lead to
increased fire danger across eastern North Carolina today.
Relative humidity values will drop to 20 to 25 percent today with
northwest winds of 15 to 25 mph... gusting as high as 40 mph at
times.

These factors... coupled with a rainfall deficit in the region will
lead to an increase in fire growth potential today... despite the
very cold temperatures. Controlled burning is discouraged today
due to the dry air and gusty winds.
