Warnings and Notices
High Surf Advisory
Statement as of 3:31 PM EST on November 14, 2009
... High surf advisory remains in effect until 8 PM EST this
evening...
... High threat of rip currents today...
Weakening low pressure will move slowly southeast away from the
coast today. Large east swells around 8 feet will continue over
the ocean and this will produce breakers of 6 to 8 feet along the
beaches through this evening.
Rough seas will also produce rip currents along the beaches
today.
Precautionary/preparedness actions...
A high surf advisory means that high surf will affect beaches in
the advisory area... producing dangerous rip currents and
localized beach erosion.
Rip currents are strong... narrow channels of water that flow out
to sea. If you become caught in a rip current... remain calm. Try
to swim on a course that is parallel to the beach until you get
away from the rip... then swim at an angle in to shore. Do not try
to swim back to shore directly against the rip... since it can
exhaust and even kill the strongest swimmer.
