Tropical Weather: Subtropical Storm Beryl (North Atlantic) Post-Tropical Cyclone Bud (East Pacific) Tropical Storm Sanvu (Western Pacific)
Weather Summary
Weather Underground midday recap for Saturday, May 26, 2012. A busy day greeted parts of the country at the start of the Memorial Day weekend. First, Subtropical Storm Beryl formed off the Carolina Coast and was expected to move slowly west-southwestward toward the northeast coast of Florida. Beryl is anticipated to make landfall late Sunday evening or early Monday with tropical storm strength winds before lingering over the area through Tuesday. Northern Florida and adjacent areas of Georgia are currently suffering through an exceptional drought, so the significant rain from Beryl will help to alleviate some of the drought.

Meanwhile, an intense heat wave gripped the Southern Plains and Southeast on Saturday. This heat wave produced temperatures well into the 90s for a wide swath the country from eastern New Mexico through Georgia. Temperatures in the 90s were also observed well north into the Central Plains and Ohio Valley. Heat index values, which tell how warm the air feels, rose above 100 degrees along the Gulf Coast where the humidity was elevated. This heat wave was expected to continue and expand Sunday, with more areas warming above 100 degrees.

While no severe weather has formed by the early afternoon, there remains a slight risk of severe weather in the Plains into the evening. This severe weather can include strong thunderstorms, large hail, strong winds, and even tornadoes. Residents in the Plains should monitor local weather conditions.

The Southern Plains and Southeast rose into the 90s and 100s, while the Northeast saw temperatures in the 70s and 80s. The Southwest rose into the 80s and 90s, while the Northwest saw temperatures in the 70s.

Beach Hazard Statement
Mobile & Email Alerts Statement as of 3:41 PM EDT on May 26, 2012

... Beach hazards statement now in effect through Sunday evening...

* hazards... high rip current risk and dangerous shore break.

* Location... along all eastern North Carolina beaches.

* Timing and tides... the most likely time for life threatening rip
currents will be a couple of hours either side of low tide. Low
tide will occur around 6:30 this afternoon.

* Potential impacts... dangerous rip currents combined with rough
surf of 4 to 6 feet producing dangerous shore break.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Rip currents are powerful channels of water flowing quickly away
from shore... which occur most often at low spots or breaks in The
Sandbar and in the vicinity of structures such as groins...
jetties and piers. Heed the advice of lifeguards and the beach
patrol. Pay attention to flags and posted signs posted near beach
access points and lifeguard stations.

If you become caught in a rip current... do not panic. Remain calm
and begin to swim parallel to shore. Once you are away from the
force of the rip current... begin to swim back to the beach. Do
not attempt to swim directly against a rip current... since it can
exhaust and even kill the strongest swimmer.

Shore break occurs when waves break directly on the beach. The
most common injuries with strong shore break are neck and back
injuries... which most often occur when the powerful surf throws a
swimmer or surfer head first into the bottom. It is extremely
important to protect your head and neck whenever you are in
breaking waves by keeping your hands in front of you at all
times.
