Coastal Flood Advisory
Statement as of 7:02 AM EST on November 14, 2009
... Coastal Flood Advisory in effect until 10 am EST this
morning...
The National Weather Service in Newport/Morehead City has issued
a coastal Flood Advisory... which is in effect until 10 am EST
this morning.
A combination of astronomical high tides and swell from a coastal
low will cause water level rises along the coast and into New
River and Bogue Inlet near Swansboro. Water level rises of 2 feet
above normal are possible.
Large east swells of 8 to 10 feet will continue over the ocean
overnight and this will produce breakers up to around 8 feet from
Cape Lookout north.
Rough seas will produce dangerous surf conditions and rip
currents along the beaches through Saturday.
Precautionary/preparedness actions...
A high surf advisory means that high surf will affect beaches in
the advisory area... producing dangerous rip currents and
localized beach erosion.
A coastal Flood Advisory indicates that onshore winds and tides
will combine to generate flooding of low areas along the shore.
Rip currents are strong... narrow channels of water that flow out
to sea. If you become caught in a rip current... remain calm. Try
to swim on a course that is parallel to the beach until you get
away from the rip... then swim at an angle in to shore. Do not try
to swim back to shore directly against the rip... since it can
exhaust and even kill the strongest swimmer.
