Flash Flood Warning
Statement as of 3:48 PM EDT on July 09, 2009
... A Flash Flood Warning remains in effect until 445 PM EDT for
Mecklenburg and Cabarrus counties...
At 332 PM EDT... National Weather Service Doppler radar indicated
that 3 to 4 inches of rain has fallen across an area from around
Charlotte to around Concord. Light to moderate rain will continue
across the warned area for another 30 to 60 minutes and additional
rainfall amounts of up to half of an inch will be possible.
Flooding is currently ongoing... especially across the Charlotte area
including Freedom drive and Wilkinson Boulevard. Other areas of
flooding include Clanton Road and West Boulevard... as well as north
Graham street and west 28th street. Motorists should avoid these
areas... as well as any other roads that are blocked by high water
conditions... and use extra caution through the mid to late afternoon
hours.
Precautionary/preparedness actions...
Do not drive your vehicle into areas where the water covers the
roadway. The water depth may be too great to allow your car to cross
safely. Move to higher ground.
Most flood deaths occur in automobiles. Never drive your vehicle into
areas where the water covers the roadway. Flood waters are usually
deeper than they appear. Just one foot of flowing water is powerful
enough to sweep vehicles off the Road. When encountering flooded
roads make the smart choice... turn around... dont drown.
