Weather Underground Forecast for Saturday, February 11, 2012.

Precipitation will spread across the East Coast on Saturday, while more rain and mountain snow showers are anticipated for parts of the West. A trough of low pressure and associated cold front continue moving eastward across the Eastern Valleys into the Eastern Seaboard. Cool temperatures to the north will allow for snow showers to develop across the Northeast and New England, while rain showers are likely over the Mid-Atlantic states. Rain showers over the Southeastern states should wind down in the early morning hours as the tail end of the system pushes offshore early in the day. Expect the New York metropolitan area to see 1 to 3 inches of snow, while the Washington D.C. area will see a messy combination of snow and freezing rain as high temperatures reach into the lower 40s.

Behind this system, a ridge of high pressure continues to build in from the Plains, pushing cold and dry air in from Canada. This allows for plenty of sunshine to spread from the Plains over the Mississippi River Valley and into the Eastern Valleys. Expect the Northern Plains and Upper Midwest to see highs in the teens again, while the Midwest will see highs in the 20s. Strong winds will accompany this system, pushing windchill values below zero in these areas. The Southern Plains will remain in the 40s on Saturday.

Out West, a trough of low pressure pushes a cold front over the Pacific Northwest and continues pulling moisture onshore with it. This will kick up more rain showers with high elevation snow showers likely in the Cascades. The tail end of the frontal boundary will sweep through California, bringing light rain showers to the coasts and interior valleys. Expect light snow showers in the Sierra Nevadas by Saturday evening.

Winter Storm Warning, Wind Chill Advisory

... Winter Storm Warning in effect until 6 am EST Sunday...
... Wind Chill Advisory in effect from 7 PM this evening to 10 am
EST Sunday...

The National Weather Service in Greenville-Spartanburg has issued
a Winter Storm Warning for snow... which is in effect until 6 am
EST Sunday. A Wind Chill Advisory has also been issued. This Wind
Chill Advisory is in effect from 7 PM this evening to 10 am EST
Sunday. The Winter Weather Advisory is no longer in effect.

* Locations... the northern mountains of North Carolina.

* Hazards... snow and blowing snow will create hazardous travel
conditions due to slippery roads and reduced visibility at
times. Strong wind gusts and cold wind chills are expected
today and tonight.

* Timing... in effect through Sunday morning.

* Accumulations... 4 to 6 inches of snow.

* Impacts... hazardous travel conditions. Some power outages due to
high winds knocking down tree branches and power lines. Roads
will become snow covered today... but before they do a thin glaze
of ice will develop making for treacherous driving conditions.

* Temperatures... will hold steady in the upper 20s for the valleys
and lower 20s for the higher elevations today and then fall into
the single digits and teens this evening as the colder air moves in.

* Winds... will steadily increase out of the northwest today with
speeds between 25 and 35 mph with gusts up to 40 to 55 mph over
the higher elevations during the afternoon and evening.


Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A Winter Storm Warning for heavy snow means severe winter weather
conditions are expected or occurring. Significant amounts of snow
are forecast that will make travel dangerous. Only travel in an
emergency. If you must travel... be sure to take along your cell
phone. Wear a warm coat... gloves... and boots. Keep a blanket...
flashlight... food... and water in your vehicle in case of an
emergency.

A Wind Chill Advisory means that very cold air and strong winds
will combine to generate low wind chills. This will result in
frost bite and lead to hypothermia if precautions are not taken.
If you must venture outdoors... make sure you wear a hat and
gloves.
