Statement as of 4:31 AM EST on December 22, 2009
... Patches of black ice on roadways early this morning...
Temperatures across the northern Piedmont were near or below
freezing early this morning. These freezing temperatures combined
with the recent snow melt will lead to the development of thin
slick spots known as black ice.
County officials in Forsyth and Guilford counties report
scattered slick spots on the major thoroughfares with several
accidents occurring on I-40 in Forsyth County. The threat for
black ice will be greater on bridges and overpasses... near Mounds
of snow pushed along side of the Road... and on rural... less
traveled roads which have dried less than primary roads.
Motorist should be extra cautious early this morning... especially
on curves... bridges... and low spots where particularly cold
temperatures may make ice more likely.
Temperatures should warm above freezing by 9 am.
