Ice Storm Warning | |

Statement as of 6:27 AM EST on December 24, 2009 ... Ice Storm Warning in effect from 9 PM this evening to noon EST Friday... The National Weather Service in Blacksburg has issued an Ice Storm Warning... which is in effect from 9 PM this evening to noon EST Friday. The Winter Storm Watch is no longer in effect. * Freezing rain is expected to begin this evening... and then continue into Friday morning. * Around a quarter inch of icing can be expected mainly along the Blue Ridge by noon Friday. Areas along and on either side of the Blue Ridge Parkway may see locally higher totals with between a third to one half inch of icing. * This amount of icing may down tree limbs and power lines. * Road temperatures overnight Thursday night into early Friday morning may be cold enough to become icy especially across the higher elevations. Precautionary/preparedness actions... An Ice Storm Warning means severe winter weather conditions are expected or occurring. Significant amounts of ice accumulations will make travel dangerous or impossible. Travel is strongly discouraged. Commerce will likely be severely impacted. If you must travel... keep an extra flashlight... food... and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency. Ice accumulations and winds will likely lead to snapped power lines and falling tree branches that add to the danger. |

Statement as of 4:17 AM EST on December 24, 2009 ... Wind Advisory in effect from 6 PM this evening to 4 PM EST Friday... The National Weather Service in Blacksburg has issued a Wind Advisory... which is in effect from 6 PM this evening to 4 PM EST Friday. * Strongest winds expected later this evening into Friday afternoon. * Southeast winds 15 to 30 mph with gusts to 50 or 55 mph across the highest elevations. * Downed trees and power lines will be possible. Precautionary/preparedness actions... A Wind Advisory means that winds of 35 mph are expected. Winds this strong can make driving difficult... especially for high profile vehicles. Use extra caution. |
