A coastal Flood Warning remains in effect from 8 PM this evening
to 8 am EST Saturday.

Low pressure will move slowly northeast along the coast tonight and
Thursday. This will produce strong east to northeast winds of 35
to 45 mph tonight and Thursday. The strong winds and building seas
will result in overwash and coastal flooding from Cape Hatteras
north. Portions of Highway 12 may become flooded and impassable at
times later tonight into Saturday.

The onshore winds and building surf will create a high threat of
rip currents along the beaches through Thursday.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A coastal Flood Warning means that flooding is occurring or
imminent. Coastal residents in the warned area should be alert
for rising water... and take appropriate action to protect life
and property.

Rip currents are strong... narrow channels of water that flow out
to sea. If you become caught in a rip current... remain calm. Try
to swim on a course that is parallel to the beach until you get
away from the rip... then swim at an angle in to shore. Do not try
to swim back to shore directly against the rip... since it can
exhaust and even kill the strongest swimmer.

* widespread moderate to heavy rain will continue along and east of
a Greenville to Williamston line overnight... resulting in additional
rainfall amounts of 1 to 3 inches. Most areas have received 2 to 4
inches of rain since Tuesday night... and the additional rain will
produce minor flooding of flood prone and poor drainage areas.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Excessive runoff from heavy rainfall will cause elevated levels on
small creeks and streams... and ponding of water on country roads and
farmland along the banks of creeks and streams.

A Flood Advisory means river or stream flows are elevated or ponding
of water in urban or other areas is occurring or is imminent.

The High Wind Warning is now in effect from 7 PM this evening to
1 am EST Friday.

An area of low pressure will move northeast across the coastal
waters of North Carolina tonight through Thursday night. At the
same time high pressure will continue over New England. The
pressure gradient in between these two features will result in
strong northeast winds across the area. Winds will subside
Thursday night through Saturday as the low moves east of the
region.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A High Wind Warning means a hazardous high wind event is expected
or occurring. Sustained wind speeds of at least 40 mph or gusts
of 58 mph or more can lead to property damage.
