Tropical Weather: Subtropical Storm Beryl (North Atlantic) Tropical Storm Sanvu (Western Pacific)
Weather Summary
Weather Underground Forecast for Sunday, May 27, 2012. More interesting weather for many parts of the country is expected Sunday. Subtropical Storm Beryl will continue on its path toward the northeast coast of Florida near Georgia. It is expected to make landfall with tropical storm strength winds either late Sunday night or early Monday morning. This storm will not be a signficant wind threat, and the rain associated with it will mostly be a blessing to this region as it has suffered through an exceptional drought.

Elsewhere, an intense heat wave will continue for the Plains and Southeast while also spreading northward into the Ohio Valley and Upper Midwest. Maximum temperature records are most likely to be broken for many areas as temperatures will soar into the 90s and 100s. Even more dangerous will be the heat index values over 100 degrees. The heat index tells you how hot the air feels. The more humid the weather, the higher the heat index will soar. Thankfully, many areas will not experience the extremely high humidity common during the Summer months.

In the West, a strong storm will move through the Northern Rockies and into the Dakotas. This storm will bring widespread rain and even some snow from Idaho through Minnesota. The associated cold front will move through the Plains, possibly instigating some strong thunderstorms that could become severe.

The Northeast will rise into the 70s and 80s, while the Southeast and Southern Plains will see temperatures in the 90s and 100s. The Northwest will rise into the 70s.

Beach Hazard Statement
Mobile & Email Alerts Statement as of 11:16 AM EDT on May 27, 2012

... Beach hazards statement remains in effect until 8 PM EDT this
evening...

* hazards... high rip current risk and dangerous shore break.

* Location... a high rip current risk along all eastern North
Carolina beaches. Dangerous shore break mainly from Cape
Hatteras to Cape Lookout.

* Timing and tides... the most likely time for life threatening rip
currents will be a couple of hours either side of low tide. The
most likely time for dangerous shore break will be a couple hours
either side of high tide. High tide will occur around 12:30 this
afternoon and low tide will occur around 6:30 this evening.

* Potential impacts... dangerous rip currents combined with rough
surf as high as 4 to 6 feet producing dangerous shore break.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Rip currents are powerful channels of water flowing quickly away
from shore... which occur most often at low spots or breaks in The
Sandbar and in the vicinity of structures such as groins...
jetties and piers. Heed the advice of lifeguards and the beach
patrol. Pay attention to flags and posted signs posted near beach
access points and lifeguard stations.

If you become caught in a rip current... do not panic. Remain calm
and begin to swim parallel to shore. Once you are away from the
force of the rip current... begin to swim back to the beach. Do
not attempt to swim directly against a rip current... since it can
exhaust and even kill the strongest swimmer.

Shore break occurs when waves break directly on the beach. The
most common injuries with strong shore break are neck and back
injuries... which most often occur when the powerful surf throws a
swimmer or surfer head first into the bottom. It is extremely
important to protect your head and neck whenever you are in
breaking waves by keeping your hands in front of you at all
times.

Public Information Statement
Mobile & Email Alerts Statement as of 10:00 am EDT on May 27, 2012

... North Carolina hurricane awareness week for 2012...

The week of may 27 through June 2nd is hurricane awareness week
in North Carolina. During this week the National Weather Service
will be issuing informative messages to help you prepare for
the 2012 hurricane season.

Each day... a different topic will be covered.

Sunday... introduction to hurricane awareness week.
Monday... hurricane basics.
Tuesday... storm surge and marine safety.
Wednesday... high winds and tornadoes.
Thursday... inland flooding.
Friday... the forecast process.
Saturday... disaster prevention.

Residents in eastern North Carolina should use this week to think
about what you will do when threatened by an approaching hurricane
or tropical storm. Hurricanes and tropical storms bring a variety
of threats. Knowing how to protect yourself and your family is
important.

Use this week to discuss weather safety with your children. Think
about where you will go if you have to evacuate. Find out if your
home is subject to flooding. Take time to prepare a family
disaster kit that could be ready in a moments notice. Setting
aside a few moments this week to talk about hurricane safety with
your family will help everything go smoother if threatened by a
hurricane this Summer and fall.
