... Coastal Flood Warning remains in effect until 8 am EST Saturday...
A coastal Flood Warning remains in effect until 8 am EST Saturday.
Strong low pressure will move slowly northeast along the coast today producing gusty northeast winds of 30 to 40 mph. The strong winds and building seas will result in overwash and coastal flooding from Cape Hatteras north. Water levels at Duck have been running about 3 feet above normal. Water levels are expected to remain at or above 3 feet above normal for the next couple of tide cycles and this will lead to significant ocean overwash and coastal flooding. The most likely times for flooding will be around 330 PM this afternoon and again around 4 am Friday morning during high tide. Portions of Highway 12 have already been closed at times and additional flooding of the Road can be expected the next couple days.
The onshore winds and building surf will create a high threat of rip currents along the beaches today.
Precautionary/preparedness actions...
A coastal Flood Warning means that flooding is occurring or imminent. Coastal residents in the warned area should be alert for rising water... and take appropriate action to protect life and property.
Rip currents are strong... narrow channels of water that flow out to sea. If you become caught in a rip current... remain calm. Try to swim on a course that is parallel to the beach until you get away from the rip... then swim at an angle in to shore. Do not try to swim back to shore directly against the rip... since it can exhaust and even kill the strongest swimmer.

A High Wind Warning remains in effect until 1 am EST Friday.
An area of low pressure will move northeast across the coastal waters of North Carolina through tonight. At the same time high pressure will continue over New England.
