... Coastal Flood Warning remains in effect until 8 am EST Saturday... ... High threat of rip currents along the beaches through Friday...
A coastal Flood Warning remains in effect until 8 am EST Saturday.
Strong low pressure will move slowly northeast just off the coast tonight. This will continue to produce gusty N/NE winds over the northern coast. Seas off Duck have been in the 15 to 18 foot range this afternoon... and when combined with the strong wind is leading to water levels around 3 feet above normal over the northern beaches. Ocean overwash was reported this morning during high tide and additional overwash and flooding is expected this afternoon around 330 PM... and again early Friday morning around 4 am PM during high tide. This will likely lead to flooding of roads over the Outer Banks north of Cape Hatteras with Road closures likely.
The onshore winds and building surf will create a high threat of rip currents along the beaches through Friday.
Precautionary/preparedness actions...
A coastal Flood Warning means that flooding is occurring or imminent. Coastal residents in the warned area should be alert for rising water... and take appropriate action to protect life and property.
Rip currents are strong... narrow channels of water that flow out to sea. If you become caught in a rip current... remain calm. Try to swim on a course that is parallel to the beach until you get away from the rip... then swim at an angle in to shore. Do not try to swim back to shore directly against the rip... since it can exhaust and even kill the strongest swimmer.

An area of low pressure will move northeast across the coastal waters of North Carolina tonight. At the same time high pressure will continue over New England. Precautionary/preparedness actions...
A High Wind Warning means a hazardous high wind event is expected or occurring. Sustained wind speeds of at least 40 mph or gusts of 58 mph or more can lead to property damage.
