A high surf advisory remains in effect until 8 PM EST this evening. A coastal Flood Advisory remains in effect until 10 am EST this morning.
Gusty north to northwest winds will continue... producing water levels 2 to 3 feet above normal over down east Carteret County. A combination of astronomical high tides and swell from a coastal low will cause water level rises along the coast and in Core Sound and near Beaufort of 2 to 3 feet above normal. Cedar Island reported a foot of water flooding some roads. Flooded roads were reported in Beaufort along front street and on Merrimon Road near Highway 70.
Large east swells of 8 to 10 feet will continue over the ocean overnight and this will produce breakers up to around 8 feet from Cape Lookout north.
Rough seas will produce dangerous surf conditions and rip currents along the beaches through Saturday.
Precautionary/preparedness actions...
A high surf advisory means that high surf will affect beaches in the advisory area... producing dangerous rip currents and localized beach erosion.
A coastal Flood Advisory indicates that onshore winds and tides will combine to generate flooding of low areas along the shore.
Rip currents are strong... narrow channels of water that flow out to sea. If you become caught in a rip current... remain calm. Try to swim on a course that is parallel to the beach until you get away from the rip... then swim at an angle in to shore. Do not try to swim back to shore directly against the rip... since it can exhaust and even kill the strongest swimmer.
