Weather Underground midday recap for Saturday, February 11, 2012.

Cold air poured into the Plains on Saturday, while snow showers developed in parts of the Northeast. A strong low pressure system that brought heavy rain to the Southern Plains and Southeast has advanced eastward and off the East Coast into the Atlantic Ocean. However, counter-clockwise flow around this system continued to push moisture into the Northeast, Great Lakes, and Ohio River Valley. In addition to cool air over the region, this allowed for snow showers to develop across Michigan and the Ohio River Valley. Snowfall accumulations ranged from 1 to 3 inches in most areas, with up to 5 inches at higher elevations of the Central Appalachians. Coastal regions remained slightly warmer, which maintained light rain showers from southern Maine through Virginia.

Behind this system, a dominant ridge of high pressure continued to build over the Plains. This system started to stretch eastward over the Mississippi Valley. Flow around this system pulled cold air in from central Canada and kept seasonable cool temperatures over the Central US. High temperatures only reached into the 30s in parts of northern Texas, while the Central and Northern Plains saw highs in the teens, with overnight lows in the negative teens.

Out West, cool conditions persisted with areas of wet weather as a trough of low pressure moved over the Pacific Northwest and into the Intermountain West and Great Basin. Rainfall totals and high elevation snow accumulation remained light. A few light rain showers extended into California as moist onshore flow persisted.

Winter Storm Warning, Wind Chill Advisory

... Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 6 am EST Sunday...
... Wind Chill Advisory remains in effect until 10 am EST Sunday...

* locations... the northern mountains of North Carolina.

* Hazards... snow and blowing snow will create hazardous travel
conditions. Greatly reduced visibilities will lead to near
blizzard conditions at times through tonight. Bitterly cold
wind chills will become more widespread.

* Timing... in effect through Sunday morning.

* Accumulations... 4 to 6 inches of snow.

* Impacts... hazardous travel conditions. Some power outages due to
high winds knocking down tree branches and power lines. Some
roads will become snow covered overnight... making for
treacherous driving conditions.

* Temperatures... will fall into the single digits and teens this
evening as the colder air moves in. Wind chill values will be
bitterly cold tonight... falling to between 5 below to 15 below
zero.

* Winds... northwest at speeds between 25 and 35 mph with gusts up
to 40 to 55 mph over the higher elevations during the evening.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A Winter Storm Warning for heavy snow means severe winter weather
conditions are expected or occurring. Significant amounts of snow
are forecast that will make travel dangerous. Only travel in an
emergency. If you must travel... be sure to take along your cell
phone. Wear a warm coat... gloves... and boots. Keep a blanket...
flashlight... food... and water in your vehicle in case of an
emergency.

A Wind Chill Advisory means that very cold air and strong winds
will combine to generate low wind chills. This will result in
frost bite and lead to hypothermia if precautions are not taken.
If you must venture outdoors... make sure you wear a hat and
gloves.
