Statement as of 4:10 AM EST on November 11, 2009 ... Flood Watch now in effect through Friday morning... The Flood Watch is now in effect for * portions of North Carolina and Virginia... including the following areas... in North Carolina... Bertie... Camden... Chowan... gates... Hertford... inland Currituck... Northampton NC... Outer Banks Currituck... Pasquotank and Perquimans. In Virginia... Chesapeake... Isle of Wight... Newport News/Hampton... Norfolk/Portsmouth... Northampton VA... Southampton... Suffolk... Virginia Beach and York. * Through Friday morning * periods of heavy rain are expected beginning today... and lasting into Friday morning. Total rainfall amounts of 4 to 7 inches are anticipated through 700 am Friday morning... with locally higher amounts possible. * Periods of heavy rainfall may cause flooding of creeks and small streams Wednesday through Thursday. In addition... river levels are expected to rise significantly... with minor river flooding possible late in the week. Additionally... flooding may occur in poor drainage areas. Precautionary/preparedness actions... A Flood Watch means there is a potential for flooding based on current forecasts. You should monitor later forecasts and be alert for possible flood warnings. Those living in areas prone to flooding should be prepared to take action should flooding develop. |

Statement as of 3:57 AM EST on November 11, 2009 ... Wind Advisory in effect from 6 PM this evening to 11 am EST Friday... The National Weather Service in Wakefield has issued a Wind Advisory... which is in effect from 6 PM this evening to 11 am EST Friday. The combination of strong high pressure building into northern New England... and low pressure moving off the coastal Carolinas today into tonight with result in increasing northeast winds. These winds from portions of the lower Maryland Eastern Shore south across interior eastern and southeast Virginia... and northeast North Carolina will average 25 to 35 mph with higher gusts... beginning tonight... and continuing into Friday morning. The winds will slowly subside Friday afternoon into Saturday as the high weakens... and low pressure moves east and out to sea. Gusty winds may bring down tree limbs... and also result in scattered power outages. Precautionary/preparedness actions... A Wind Advisory means that winds of 25 to 35 mph are expected. Winds this strong can make driving difficult... especially for high profile vehicles. Use extra caution. |
