	Coastal Flood Watch
Statement as of 3:13 PM EST on December 17, 2009 ... Coastal Flood Watch in effect from late Friday night through Saturday evening north of Cape Lookout... The National Weather Service in Newport/Morehead City has issued a coastal Flood Watch... which is in effect from late Friday night through Saturday evening. Low pressure will approach from the southwest Friday and move northeast near or just offshore of the coast Friday night into Saturday. Strong east to northeast winds will develop ahead of the low late Friday and Friday evening then eventually shift to the northwest later Saturday as the low lifts to the north. These strong winds will builds seas to 10 to 15 feet... highest off the Outer Banks Friday night and Saturday. Tides are expected to run 2 to 3 feet above normal and this could lead to ocean over wash and coastal flooding. Areas north of Cape Hatteras will have the greatest threat of over wash... especially Saturday morning during high tide. The strong north to northeast winds will lead to higher than normal water levels over the southern Pamlico Sound Friday night. As the winds become northwest later Saturday the higher water levels will shift more to the sound side of Ocracoke and Hatteras islands. At this point water levels of 2 to 3 feet above normal are expected adjacent to the sound. Precautionary/preparedness actions... A coastal Flood Watch means that conditions favorable for flooding are expected to develop. Coastal residents should be alert for later statements or warnings... and take action to protect property.
