Statement as of 2:46 PM EST on November 10, 2009
... Flood Watch in effect from 6 PM EST this evening through late
Wednesday night...
The National Weather Service in Blacksburg has issued a
* Flood Watch for portions of North Carolina and Virginia...
including the following areas... in North Carolina... Alleghany
NC... Ashe... Caswell... Rockingham... Stokes... Surry... Watauga...
Wilkes and Yadkin. In Virginia... Carroll... Charlotte... Floyd...
Franklin... Grayson... Halifax... Henry... Patrick and
Pittsylvania.
* From 6 PM EST this evening through late Wednesday night
* periods of heavy rain are expected beginning tonight... and
lasting into Wednesday night. Total rainfall amounts of 3.0 to
3.5 inches by 600 am Thursday morning are forecast.
* Heavy rainfall will cause flooding of creeks and small
streams... possibly beginning late tonight. If widespread
rainfall of over 3 inches does occur... then flooding of main
Stem rivers is also likely from later Wednesday into Thursday.
The rivers most likely to be affected would be the new... Yadkin
and Dan rivers.
Precautionary/preparedness actions...
A Flood Watch means there is a potential for flooding based on
current forecasts. You should monitor later forecasts and be
alert for possible flood warnings. Those living in areas prone to
flooding should be prepared to take action should flooding
develop.
