Weather Underground Forecast for Monday, February 13, 2012.

The trough of low pressure that brought unsettled weather to the West on Sunday will advance into the Plains on Monday with more mixed precipitation. The trough will support a low and associated warm front moving eastward into the Southern Plains. As the system progresses, rain showers with periods of heavy rain and isolated thunderstorms will spread from parts of central/eastern Texas into western Louisiana, mixed precipitation will develop in parts of Oklahoma and Arkansas, and snow will blanket parts of the Central Plains, Mid-Mississippi Valley, and parts of the western Ohio Valley. Areas from eastern Texas through Arkansas should expect the heaviest precipitation totals. Heightened winter weather conditions will allow Winter Weather Advisories and a few Winter Storm Warnings to remain in effect through the day. Elsewhere east of the Continental Divide, lake-effect snow showers will continue along parts of the Lower Great Lakes Snowbelt.

In the West, a Pacific cold front pushing across the Pacific Northwest will drop southward across northern California, bringing coastal and valley rain and significant snowfall to the Sierra Nevadas.

... Winter Weather Advisory in effect until 2 PM CST this
afternoon...

The National Weather Service in Jackson has issued a Winter
Weather Advisory for light freezing rain and light sleet... which is
in effect until 2 PM CST this afternoon.

* Timing: a light wintry mix of rain... freezing rain and sleet will
occur this morning into the early afternoon.

* Main impact: light accumulations of light freezing rain or light
sleet will be possible... mainly for elevated surfaces such as
bridges and overpasses. Any accumulations of ice will total less
than a few hundredths of an inch.


Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A Winter Weather Advisory means that periods of sleet and freezing
rain will cause travel difficulties. Be prepared for slippery roads
and limited visibilities... and use caution while driving.

                  severe weather awareness week 2012
                    day 1 - Monday February 13 2012

Today is the first day of severe weather awareness week in
Mississippi. The purpose of this week is to encourage everyone
to exercise their preparedness plans.

All this week we will discuss different types of severe weather and
some safety rules people can use to protect their lives and
property.

Today we will discuss severe thunderstorms.

Thunderstorms can produce cloud to ground lightning... large
hail... tornadoes... and flash flooding. All thunderstorms can cause
damage... but the National Weather Service reserves the term
severe thunderstorm for those that produce wind gusts 58 mph or
greater and or hail 1 inch or larger in diameter.

Straight line damaging winds are common across Mississippi
especially during the Spring and Summer months. These storms
can knock down trees and cause damage to structures. In early April
2011... a large complex of thunderstorms moved across the state and then
continued moving across the remainder of the southeastern states. This
complex of storms set a 24 hour record for total severe weather reports
including widespread damaging winds... large hail... and a few tornadoes.

Large hail can damage crops and property. In 2005 a hail storm in
Yazoo County produced tennis-Ball size hail. This hail was also wind
driven and did a significant amount of property damage to houses. In
several cases the hail penetrated the siding of houses or took the
paint off.

The National Weather Service encourages you to take severe thunderstorm
watches and warnings seriously. Winds from severe thunderstorms are at
times as strong as some tornadoes.

The best action to take if a severe thunderstorm approaches is to
find shelter in a strong sturdy building that will stand up to strong
winds. Stay away from windows. Remember tornadoes can and do form
rapidly from severe thunderstorms. So take the same precautions as
you would if a Tornado Warning was issued.
