Weather Summary
Weather Underground Forecast for Friday, February 10, 2012.

Expect active weather to move into the East on Friday, as a trough of low pressure moves from the Southern Plains and into the Eastern Valleys. Flow around this system will pull moisture and energy in from the Gulf of Mexico. This will produce scattered showers and thunderstorms over the Southern Plains and Lower Mississippi River Valley throughout the day. There is a slight chance that these storms will turn severe with strong winds and heavy downpours. The northern side of this system will push a cold front into the Midwest, which will move through the Great Lakes and into the Ohio River Valley. Expect light and scattered snow showers to develop along the front as it passes through northern Michigan and into the eastern Ohio Valley and the Central Appalachians. Warmer temperatures ahead of this system will allow for rain showers to develop in parts of the Mid-Atlantic states and the Tennessee Valley.

Out West, a weak trough of low pressure moves onshore from the Pacific Ocean, bringing some moisture onshore with it. This will produce more rain and high elevation snow showers over the Pacific Northwest. Some of this moisture will stretch southward into northern California, allowing for light rain and high elevation snow showers to spread into the northern Sierras.

Hard Freeze Watch, Special Statement
Mobile & Email Alerts Statement as of 3:54 PM CST on February 10, 2012

... Hard freeze watch in effect from late Saturday night through
Sunday morning...

The National Weather Service in New Orleans has issued a hard
freeze watch... which is in effect from late Saturday night
through Sunday morning.

* Timing... approximately 6 hours of sub freezing temperatures can be
expected with lows in the lower to mid 20s.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A hard freeze watch means sub-freezing temperatures are possible.
These conditions could kill crops and other sensitive vegetation.

646 am CST Fri Feb 10 2012

... Much colder air to affect the area this weekend...

A cold front will move through southern Mississippi and southeast
Louisiana overnight into Saturday morning... with a very cold
airmass to follow behind the front. High temperatures on Saturday
and Sunday will struggle to reach 50 degrees across much of the
area.

Saturday night is expected to be one of the coldest nights of the
winter across most of the area... with lows in the lower and middle
20s along and north of the Interstate 10 and 12 corridors. A light
freeze is possible in the southshore and Houma areas.

Due to the unseasonably warm weather and lack of freezing
temperatures in the last several weeks... a freeze warning will
likely be issued for most of the area for Saturday night. A hard
freeze warning may be necessary in northern areas as well. Tender
vegetation that has begun to develop may need to be protected
Saturday night. Temperatures Sunday night will remain cold with
freezes possible again across portions of the area.

Persons planning outdoor activities this weekend should be
prepared for the much colder conditions and dress appropriately.
