Active Advisory: Special Weather Statement (US Severe Weather) Active Notice: Record Report
Tropical Weather: Subtropical Storm Beryl (North Atlantic) Post-Tropical Cyclone Bud (East Pacific) Typhoon Sanvu (Western Pacific)
Weather Summary
Weather Underground Forecast for Saturday, May 26, 2012.

Subtropical Storm Beryl formed late Friday off the Carolina Coast and is expected to move slowly southwestward over the weekend. The storm may maintain tropical storm strength as it approaches the northeast coast of Florida later Sunday night. The storm itself may dump a significant amount of rain on this part of Florida and adjacent areas of Georgia, potentially good news to an area that is currently in an exceptional drought.

The main weather feature over the nation will be a low pressure system moving off the Rockies and into the Plains on Saturday. Flow around this system continues pushing a warm front eastward, over the Plains and through the Midwest. Expect widespread showers and thunderstorms to develop along this frontal boundary, from the Northern and Central Plains through the Great Lakes. Some of these storms will turn severe with strong winds, large hail, and heavy rainfall. Severe thunderstorms are most likely over Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Iowa. By Saturday evening, the tail end of this system will reach the Northeast, bringing lighter and more widespread showers and thunderstorms to the region.

The back side of this broad low pressure system will continue pulling cool air in from Canada. This will allow for rain showers to turn to snow showers at the highest elevations of the Northern Rockies, Intermountain West, and Central Rockies. At the same time, strong and gusty winds will persist for the southern side of this system. In combination with warm and dry conditions, this will maintain high fire danger for the Southwest and Southern Rockies.

Special Weather Statement
Mobile & Email Alerts Statement as of 3:54 AM CDT on May 26, 2012

... Record heat on the way this Holiday weekend...

Be prepared for a hot Memorial Day weekend... including Memorial
Day itself... with record high temperatures in the mid and upper
90s likely in most locations. Due to a lack of high surface
moisture... heat index values should stay close to the actual air
temperatures... generally in the upper 90s to near 100 degrees.
This will be the hottest air this area has seen so far this year.
The last time it was this hot... was back in the early part of
September 2011.

People should be prepared to deal with the affects of this
prolonged period of hot weather. Follow the basic rules of heat
safety to keep from becoming overheated. Drink plenty of
water... wear light colored... light weight clothing... and avoid
strenuous activities during the hottest part of the day. Take
frequent breaks and be sure to put on a high spf sunscreen to
limit the potential for sunburn. Make sure pets have plenty of
fresh water.

In addition... with moderate to severe drought conditions in
place... the risk of wildfires will be increased somewhat. Caution
should be exercised with any outdoor burning this weekend. On the
positive side... southerly winds will be much lighter than they
were on Thursday... and humidities will run a bit higher.

Record Report
Mobile & Email Alerts Statement as of 04:36 PM CDT on May 25, 2012

... Record high temperature set at Paducah KY...

A record high temperature of 93 degrees was set at Paducah KY today.
This breaks the old record of 92 set in 2006. Near record high
temperatures are in the forecast for the next two days.
