Weather Summary
Weather Underground midday recap for Monday, February 13, 2012. A storm raced out of the Rockies and into the Plains on Monday, producing a good shot of Winter weather in the Plains and Mississippi Valley. Winter Weather Advisories were posted from eastern Oklahoma through the western Tennessee Valley in anticipation of several inches of new snow. Snow fell as far north as Minnesota and Michigan, but lighter snow was reported the farther north you went. In the warmer air closer to the Gulf Coast, rain fell in Louisiana and Mississippi.

Wet weather also greeted the West Coast as a Pacific storm slammed into California. This storm lacked a tremendous amount of moisture, but it has been a very dry Winter for the state thus far, and any precipitation is very much welcomed. Up to a foot of new snow is possible from this storm in the higher elevations of the Sierra Nevadas when all is said and done.

The East Coast was dry as a high pressure continued to dominate, but the region experienced another chilly day. By the afternoon, temperatures were still in the 20s and 30s for many areas in New England, while temperatures in the 30s were experience as far south as Arkansas. Morning temperatures were in the 20s in northern Florida.

The Northern Plains rose into the 20s and 30s, while the Northwest saw temperatures in the 30s and 40s. The Southwest rose into the 40s, 50s, and some 60s.

Winter Weather Advisory
Mobile & Email Alerts Statement as of 2:56 PM CST on February 13, 2012

... Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until midnight CST
tonight...

A Winter Weather Advisory for light snow and freezing drizzle
remains in effect until midnight CST tonight.

* Short term trends... periods of light snow will continue through
this afternoon changing to freezing drizzle areas. Reports from
spotters indicate general storm total snow amounts ranging from
an inch to three inches so far. The Kansas and Missouri
departments of transportation indicate that most roads are
partially snow covered and slushy in some areas. Numerous traffic
accidents have been reported.

* Timing and areas affected... periods of light moderate snow can
be expected over the Eastern Ozarks the rest of this afternoon. Some
intervals of freezing drizzle will also be
possible... particularly this afternoon and this evening.

* Snow accumulation... light snow with occasional periods of
moderate snow will gradually accumulate through this afternoon
over the Eastern Ozarks. Light snow has ended over the Western
Ozarks. A storm total snow accumulation of one to three inches
with locally heavier amounts is expected.

* Ice accumulations... freezing drizzle is expected to develop in
this afternoon and this evening. A light glaze with an ice
accumulation of one tenth of an inch or less will be possible
for areas along and south of the Highway 60 Corridor. North of
the Highway 60 corridor... an ice accumulation of a few
hundredths of an inch will be possible.

* Impacts... Road surfaces will be slick today. See the latest
Missouri and Kansas Department of Transportation web sites
(modot.Org and ksdot.Org) for the latest Road conditions and
traffic alerts. Drive slowly and carefully. Be prepared for
completely snow covered roads... or at the very least slick
areas... especially on bridges and overpasses.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A Winter Weather Advisory means that periods of snow and freezing
drizzle will cause travel difficulties. Be prepared for slippery
roads and limited visibilities... and use caution while driving.
