A Winter Storm Warning for snow... sleet and freezing rain remains
in effect until 7 PM CDT this evening.
* Short term trends... moderate to occasionally heavy snow will
continue along and west of the Highway 71 corridor overnight.
Additional accumulations of 1 to 3 inches are expected through
sunrise.
A mixture of freezing rain... sleet... and snow will continue
along and just to the west of the Highway 65 corridor.
Additional snow accumulations up to 2 inches are expected
through sunrise. Ice accumulations up to a tenth of an inch
are expected for the remainder of tonight... mainly on
elevated surfaces.
* Timing and areas affected... moderate to occasionally heavy
snowfall will continue into Sunday along and west of the Highway
71 corridor. The snow will begin to diminish in the afternoon.
Freezing rain... sleet... and snow will continue along and just
to the west of the Highway 65 corridor into Sunday morning.
Precipitation may then change to rain in the afternoon as
temperatures warm just above freezing.
* Snow accumulations... total storm accumulations of 5 to 10 inches
can be expected along and west of an Anderson to Bolivar to
Versailles line. Locally higher amounts up to a foot will be
possible.
Total snow accumulations will vary greatly along and just west
of Highway 65. Amounts will range from just a trace east of
Highway 65... to greater than 4 inches about 10 miles west of
Highway 65.
* Ice accumulations up to two tenths of an inch are expected along
and just west of the Highway 65 corridor. Most of the
accumulation will be on elevated surfaces... such as trees and
power lines.
* Winds and visibility... gusty north winds will reduce
visibilities below one half of a mile at times due to blowing
snow.
* Impacts... law enforcement agencies have reported numerous
accidents across the area. The Missouri and Kansas departments
of transportation continue to indicate that roadways are
partially to fully snow and slush covered. Partial melting of
the falling snow has made roadways especially treacherous due to
the slushy conditions. Motorists are urged to use extreme
caution if traveling for the remainder of tonight.
Precautionary/preparedness actions...
A Winter Storm Warning means significant amounts of
snow... sleet... and ice are expected or occurring. Strong winds
are also possible. This will make travel very hazardous or
impossible. Consider taking a winter storm kit along with you.
This kit should include such items as tire chains... booster
cables... a flashlight... shovel... blankets... extra clothing and
anything else that would help you survive in case you become
stranded.
