Sibley... southwestern Scott and western Carver counties until 400
PM CDT Monday...

At 1237 PM CDT... emergency management and local law enforcement
continued to report areal flooding... with multiple reports of ice
jams resulting in flooded roads. Numerous County and township
roads remain closed. Conditions are generally improving and
water levels on the smaller streams are beginning to recede... but
additional drainage is expected and the potential for more ice jams
remains. In addition... flood warnings remain in effect for the
larger rivers across the area... which continue to rise. Information
on those warnings can be found in separate flood statements.

In addition to rural areas... some other locations that may
experience flooding include New Ulm... St James... Blue Earth... New
Richland... Springfield... Henderson... Mapleton... Waseca...
Janesville... New Germany... Winnebago... Watertown and Mayer.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Runoff from snow melt and ice jams will cause flooding of small
creeks and streams... country roads... as well as farmland along the
banks of creeks and streams.

To report flooding... have the nearest law enforcement agency relay
your report to the National Weather Service forecast office in the
Twin Cities.

Your National Weather Service invites your participation in the
of National flood safety awareness week, March 15
to 19, 2010.

Today's theme is flood safety and preparation. Floods happen... an
average of 81 deaths per year have occurred between 1988 and
2007... which does not include flood related hurricane/storm surge
deaths. Good preparation and knowing what to do in a flood will
increase your safety and possibly your survival.

Some flood safety preparation tips are...

- prepare a family disaster plan.
- Check if your insurance covers flood damages. If not... get
flood insurance.
- Keep insurance... important documents... such as copies of drivers
license and credit cards... and other valuable items in a
safe deposit box.
- Assemble a disaster supplies kit... ensure to include prescription
medications... food and water.
- Find out where you can go if ordered to evacuate.
- Make a keep-in-touch arrangement with relatives and friends.

for ideas and examples of disaster plans and disaster kits.
