Weather Summary
Weather Underground Forecast for Friday, February 10, 2012.

Expect active weather to move into the East on Friday, as a trough of low pressure moves from the Southern Plains and into the Eastern Valleys. Flow around this system will pull moisture and energy in from the Gulf of Mexico. This will produce scattered showers and thunderstorms over the Southern Plains and Lower Mississippi River Valley throughout the day. There is a slight chance that these storms will turn severe with strong winds and heavy downpours. The northern side of this system will push a cold front into the Midwest, which will move through the Great Lakes and into the Ohio River Valley. Expect light and scattered snow showers to develop along the front as it passes through northern Michigan and into the eastern Ohio Valley and the Central Appalachians. Warmer temperatures ahead of this system will allow for rain showers to develop in parts of the Mid-Atlantic states and the Tennessee Valley.

Out West, a weak trough of low pressure moves onshore from the Pacific Ocean, bringing some moisture onshore with it. This will produce more rain and high elevation snow showers over the Pacific Northwest. Some of this moisture will stretch southward into northern California, allowing for light rain and high elevation snow showers to spread into the northern Sierras.

Extreme Cold Warning
Mobile & Email Alerts Statement as of 2:45 AM CST on February 10, 2012

... Extreme cold warning in effect until 10 am CST this morning...

The National Weather Service in Grand Forks has issued an extreme
cold warning... which is in effect until 10 am CST this morning.

* Wind chill readings will continue to drop into the 30 to 40
below zero range through the early morning hours before
recovering during the late morning and afternoon.

* Early morning temperatures will drop down into the 10 to 15
below zero range.

* North winds at 10 to 20 mph will bring wind chills of 30 to 40
below zero.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

An extreme cold warning means that dangerously low temperatures
are expected for a prolonged period of time. Frostbite and
hypothermia are likely if exposed to these temperatures... so make
sure a hat... facemask... and heavy gloves or mittens are
available.

Special Weather Statement
Mobile & Email Alerts Statement as of 4:26 AM CST on February 09, 2012

... Hazardous wind chills possible Friday morning...

A strong cold front moving through Thursday will help usher in
much colder temperatures for the end of the week. With
temperatures Thursday night falling below zero... and winds of 10
to 20 mph... wind chills in the 20 to 30 below zero range are
possible. Some locations could see wind chills lower than 30 below
early Friday morning.

These wind chill values could result in frostbite and lead to
hypothermia if precautions are not taken. Those going outdoors
should make sure to wear appropriate clothing... including hat
and gloves.
