Winter Storm Watch | |

Statement as of 4:07 PM EST on December 23, 2009 ... Winter Storm Watch remains in effect from Thursday afternoon through Friday afternoon... * up to a quarter inch of ice accumulation is possible. * The freezing rain is expected to begin Thursday afternoon over the Lake Shore counties. The progression eastward should be very slow. Areas near U.S. 131 should begin to see the wintry mix through the evening. Then areas east of U.S. 131 will finally see the precipitation move in after midnight. * Areas north of a Whitehall to Alma line will see the greatest threat for freezing rain and ice accumulation. Areas south of this line will likely see the freezing rain change to rain Christmas morning. * Easterly winds could gust to 30 mph. Impacts... * Holiday travel after nightfall on Christmas eve into Christmas day could become impacted. Roadways and sidewalks could become ice covered and slippery. * Ice coated trees and gusty winds over 30 mph could lead to downed tree limbs and scattered power outages. Precautionary/preparedness actions... * a Winter Storm Watch is issued when severe winter weather is possible... but not imminent. At this time... there is a potential for significant ice accumulations. Future driving and walking conditions may become hazardous... so it is important to monitor the latest forecasts. |
