Watches & Warnings

Lake Effect Snow Warning
Issued: 4:13 PM EST Feb. 11, 2016 – National Weather Service

... Lake effect Snow Advisory remains in effect until 7 PM EST
this Evening...
... Lake effect snow warning remains in effect from 1 am Friday to
7 am EST Saturday...

Hazardous weather...

* lake effect snow will gradually diminish into this evening.
Moderate to heavy lake effect snow will then develop tonight
between 1am and 3am. Moderate to heavy snow will continue
   through Friday night.

* Winds near Lake Superior will gust to 30 mph into this
evening... causing patchy blowing snow. Winds will increase
out of the northwest on Friday morning... gusting as high as
45 mph near Lake Superior. The strongest winds will occur
late Friday morning through Friday evening. This will lead to
white-out conditions Friday into Friday night... especially
   along M-28.

* Additional snow accumulations of 1 to 2 inches are expected
this afternoon and evening from Melstrand to Grand Marais to
Pine Stump Junction. Snow accumulations tonight through
Friday night are expected to be 6 to 12 inches. Lower amounts
are expected southwest of Traunik and Trenary.

* Wind chill readings will be as low as 25 below zero Friday
   afternoon and Friday night.

Impacts...

* snow covered roads will continue to be slippery.

* Blowing and drifting snow will lead to very dangerous travel
conditions tonight through Friday night. Similar past events
have led to the closure of M-28 between Harvey and Munising.
If you become stranded... you will also have to face bitterly
cold wind chills. Avoid travel if possible.

* Wind chill values to 25 below zero can lead to frost bite on
exposed skin in as little as 15 minutes.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

* a lake effect snow warning means significant amounts of lake
effect snow are forecast that will make travel very hazardous
   or impossible.

* A lake effect Snow Advisory Means Lake effect snow is
forecast that will make travel difficult in some areas. Use
   caution when traveling.
