Weather Summary
Weather Underground Forecast for Wednesday, May 22, 2013.

After an active severe weather pattern during the beginning of the week, cooler and relatively calmer weather conditions will return to much of the Central U.S. on Wednesday as the trough of low pressure impacting the region moves to the East. As the trough progresses, an associated low pressure system will reorganize near southern Lake Michigan and will continue northeastward across Michigan toward the Lower Great Lakes through Wednesday evening. Expect rain showers to continue across the Upper Midwest into areas of the inland Northeast throughout this transition. Meanwhile, the system's associated cold front will trail southwestward from the low across the Ohio and Tennessee Valleys through the Lower Mississippi Valley and into the Southern Plains. Favorable energy and environmental conditions ahead of the cold front combined with ample moisture from the Gulf of Mexico will set the stage for shower and thunderstorm activity through the day. Areas just east of the advancing cold front will experience the heaviest amounts of precipitation, with areas of flooding and flash flooding possible in parts of eastern Texas and Louisiana. As the cold front continues eastward, areas of the Lower Great Lakes into the Ohio and Tennessee Valleys are at slight risk of severe thunderstorm development through the evening. Severe storms in these regions may become capable of producing damaging wind gusts, marginally severe hail, and even a few tornadoes during the evening hours.

Elsewhere, scattered showers and thunderstorms will remain possible along the East Coast and in the Florida Peninsula. Out West, a cold trough of low pressure will become anchored over the Pacific Northwest, bringing cool, below normal temperatures to the Pacific Northwest and California, as well as scattered precipitation to the Northwest.

Areal Flood Advisory
Mobile & Email Alerts Statement as of 12:41 PM EDT on May 22, 2013

The National Weather Service in Grand Rapids has issued a

* Flood Advisory for...
Gratiot County in central Michigan...
Isabella County in central Michigan...
Kent County in southwest Michigan...
Mecosta County in central Michigan...
Montcalm County in central Michigan...
Muskegon County in west central Michigan...
Newaygo County in west central Michigan...
Oceana County in west central Michigan...
Ottawa County in southwest Michigan...

* until 630 PM EDT

* at 1231 PM EDT... National Weather Service Doppler radar indicated
showers and thunderstorms with heavy rainfall developing across
the advisory area. Doppler radar estimated that 1 to 2 inches of
rain has fallen across portions of Muskegon and Oceana counties.
Rainfall rates in the heaviest showers and thunderstorms have been
over a half inch per hour. This is enough rain to cause urban
and poor drainage flooding.

* The highest storm total rainfall amounts from this system will
likely be over in Muskegon and Oceana counties where storm total
amounts could locally exceed 3 inches. This is enough rain to
cause rapid rises on smalls streams and creeks along with minor
flooding. Elsewhere the 1 to 2 hour rainfall amounts could
locally exceed an inch. This would lead to urban and poor
drainage flooding and some erosion due to rapid runoff.

* Runoff from this excessive rainfall will cause minor flooding to
occur... especially along small streams and near low water
crossings. Some locations that will experience minor flooding
include... Alma... Big Rapids... Grand Haven... Grand Rapids...
Greenville... Holland... Howard City... Mount Pleasant... Muskegon...
Newaygo... Pentwater... Ashley... Barryton... Beechwood... Bitely...
Cedar Springs... Coopersville... Edmore... Fremont... Hudsonville...
Ithaca... Lowell... Mecosta... Morley... Rockford... Rosebush...
Shelby... Sparta... Stanton and Weidman.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Excessive runoff from this storm will cause minor flooding of small
creeks and streams... urban areas... highways... streets and underpasses
as well as other drainage areas and low lying spots.

Special Weather Statement
Mobile & Email Alerts Statement as of 2:15 PM EDT on May 22, 2013

... Significant weather advisory...

At 210 PM... showers and thunderstorms were developing along and
south of a warm front from near Pentwater to Harrison. Additional
showers and thunderstorms were developing in a line from near
Ionia... southwest to Paw Paw. Movement was northeast at around 25
mph.

In addition locally a half inch of rain could accompany the
heavier showers and storms. This could lead to urban and poor
drainage flooding.

While no funnel clouds or tornadoes have been reported at this
time... the meteorological conditions today support the rapid and
sudden development of funnel clouds and even brief weak
tornadoes... which may appear with little or no warning. These may
even occur from just rain showers... without a thunderstorm and
lightning in the vicinity.

If a funnel cloud or tornado is spotted... get inside a sturdy
structure immediately. Please report funnel clouds or tornadoes to
local law enforcement for relay to the National Weather Service.
