Weather Summary
Weather Underground Forecast for Friday, February 10, 2012.

Expect active weather to move into the East on Friday, as a trough of low pressure moves from the Southern Plains and into the Eastern Valleys. Flow around this system will pull moisture and energy in from the Gulf of Mexico. This will produce scattered showers and thunderstorms over the Southern Plains and Lower Mississippi River Valley throughout the day. There is a slight chance that these storms will turn severe with strong winds and heavy downpours. The northern side of this system will push a cold front into the Midwest, which will move through the Great Lakes and into the Ohio River Valley. Expect light and scattered snow showers to develop along the front as it passes through northern Michigan and into the eastern Ohio Valley and the Central Appalachians. Warmer temperatures ahead of this system will allow for rain showers to develop in parts of the Mid-Atlantic states and the Tennessee Valley.

Out West, a weak trough of low pressure moves onshore from the Pacific Ocean, bringing some moisture onshore with it. This will produce more rain and high elevation snow showers over the Pacific Northwest. Some of this moisture will stretch southward into northern California, allowing for light rain and high elevation snow showers to spread into the northern Sierras.

Winter Weather Advisory
Mobile & Email Alerts Statement as of 4:21 PM EST on February 10, 2012

... Winter Weather Advisory now in effect until 11 PM EST this
evening...

The Winter Weather Advisory is now in effect until 11 PM EST this
evening.

Hazardous weather...

* 1 to 3 inches of snow had already fallen as of 4 PM across much
of the advisory area. The exception was south of a line from
roughly Kalamazoo to Lansing where less than an inch had
   fallen.

* Widespread snow is expected this evening. The heaviest snow
will occur through 9 PM with visibilities below one mile. The
snow will taper off or end completely later this evening.

* Temperatures will plunge into the 20s and teens from north to
south through 10 PM. Wind chills will fall to zero to ten below
   zero overnight.

* All of the newly fallen snow will freeze up as temperatures
   drop tonight.

Impacts...

* icy roads and reduced visibilities leading to slide offs.

* Much slower evening commute.

* Frost bite possible late tonight if exposed to the cold long
   enough.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

* the Michigan Department of Transportation reminds motorists
to adjust speeds based on the conditions... and to take it
   slow in ice and snow.

* Weather preparedness information is available on line at
   www.Ready.Gov/winter.
