Weather Summary
Weather Underground Forecast for Friday, February 10, 2012.

Expect active weather to move into the East on Friday, as a trough of low pressure moves from the Southern Plains and into the Eastern Valleys. Flow around this system will pull moisture and energy in from the Gulf of Mexico. This will produce scattered showers and thunderstorms over the Southern Plains and Lower Mississippi River Valley throughout the day. There is a slight chance that these storms will turn severe with strong winds and heavy downpours. The northern side of this system will push a cold front into the Midwest, which will move through the Great Lakes and into the Ohio River Valley. Expect light and scattered snow showers to develop along the front as it passes through northern Michigan and into the eastern Ohio Valley and the Central Appalachians. Warmer temperatures ahead of this system will allow for rain showers to develop in parts of the Mid-Atlantic states and the Tennessee Valley.

Out West, a weak trough of low pressure moves onshore from the Pacific Ocean, bringing some moisture onshore with it. This will produce more rain and high elevation snow showers over the Pacific Northwest. Some of this moisture will stretch southward into northern California, allowing for light rain and high elevation snow showers to spread into the northern Sierras.

... Michigan NOAA Weather Radio all hazards awareness week continues
through February 11th...

The week of February 5th through the 11th has been declared
NOAA Weather Radio all hazards awareness week in Michigan. All
citizens are being urged to learn more about NOAA Weather Radio
and the potentially life saving information broadcast by National
Weather Service offices serving Michigan.

NOAA Weather Radio all hazards broadcasts from over 1000
transmitters on seven frequencies in the vhf band... ranging from
162.400 to 162.550 megahertz. These frequencies are outside of the
normal am and FM broadcast bands.

Special radios designed to receive only NOAA Weather Radio all
hazards are available from several manufacturers. Most NOAA Weather
Radio all hazards receivers are either battery-operated or
ac-powered desktop models with battery backup. Many come with
special audible or visual alert features which are activated by
National Weather Service forecasters in the event of severe weather
or during a local environmental hazard. For the cost of a new pair
of shoes... you can own a special weather radio that provides instant
access to the same weather reports and emergency information that
meteorologists and emergency personnel use... information that can
save your life.

Some cb radios... scanners... short wave... and Standard am/FM radios
are also capable of receiving NOAA Weather Radio all hazards
transmissions... but lack alerting features. Even some
automobile... aircraft and marine manufacturers offer NOAA Weather
Radio all hazards in their product lines. Weather radios can be
purchased at many electronics stores... other retail outlets... or
over the internet.

Additional information on NOAA Weather Radio receivers can be found
at... http://www.Weather.Gov/NWR/nwrrcvr.Htm

By nature and design... NOAA Weather Radio all hazards coverage is
limited to an area within 40 miles of the transmitter. The quality
of what is heard is dictated by the distance from the
transmitter... local terrain and location of the receiver. People on
flat terrain or at sea... using a high quality receiver... can
sometimes receive the signal beyond 40 miles... though the quality
and availability of the signal may be compromised during unsettled
weather. Those living in cities surrounded by large buildings... as
well as those in mountain valleys with Standard receivers... may
experience little or no reception at less than 40 miles. If
possible... a receiver should be tested in the location it will be
used prior to Purchase.

If you have questions regarding the reception or transmission of a
NOAA Weather Radio all hazards broadcast... contact your local
National Weather Service office.
