... Record low maximum temperature set at Gaylord on Thursday...

The temperature reached a high of 58 degrees in Gaylord on Thursday
July 2nd. This was the lowest high temperature ever recorded for
this date... breaking the record of 62 degrees set in 1929.

... Northern Michigan weather history on Independence day...

With the 233rd birthday of the United States tomorrow... we thought
it would be interesting to look back at the weather extremes that
have occurred in eastern upper and northern lower Michigan on July
4th.

Typically... high temperatures are in the upper 70s to around 80...
while lows are typically in the 50s. But the extremes are
impressive. In 1921... northern Michigan was in the midst of a
blistering... oppressive heatwave. High temperatures were between 95
and 105 degrees. From mid-June to mid-July... 21 days were hotter
than 90 degrees... away from the influence of the Great Lakes. For
the month of July... Houghton Lake recorded 17 days above 90 degrees.

High temperatures were significantly cooler than normal in 1951 and
1967. Temperatures struggled to reach 60 degrees on those
Independence days. In fact... in 1951... one to two inches of rain
fell over parts of the area.

In 1994... severe thunderstorms hit parts of northern lower Michigan
... Including areas from Traverse City to Grayling to Lake City and
Houghton Lake. Damaging winds uprooted and snapped off trees...
downed trees limbs and powerlines... and blew out windows. Some roofs
were also damaged.
