Beach Hazard Statement
Statement as of 9:07 AM EDT on July 30, 2015

... Beach hazards statement in effect until 2 PM EDT this
afternoon...

The National Weather Service in northern Indiana has issued a
beach hazards statement for high waves and dangerous swimming
conditions... which is in effect until 2 PM EDT this afternoon.

* High wave action and dangerous swimming conditions expected

* strong rip currents expected...

* strong structural currents possible...

* overview/potential impacts... west winds of 10 to 20 mph this
morning will create waves of 3 to 5 feet through early
afternoon. This will result in dangerous and potentially deadly
swimming conditions due to high waves and strong rip currents
along the beaches in Berrien County. Winds are expected to
diminish toward noon and waves will begin to subside early this
afternoon.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Life threatening waves and currents are expected at the beaches.
People visiting the beaches should stay out of the water.

Rip currents are powerful channels of water flowing quickly away
from shore... which occur most often at low spots or breaks in
sandbars. Rip currents can sweep you into deeper water.

Structural currents form along piers where longshore currents and
wave action flow into the structure. Structural currents can
sweep you out into deeper water along the pier structure.
