Statement as of 5:15 PM EDT on March 20, 2010 ... Record high temperature set at Portland Maine today... A record high temperature of 70 degrees was set at Portland ME today. This breaks the old record of 62 set in 1959. The low today was 33 degrees giving Portland an average temperature of 52 degrees for the day. That is also a record for March 20th... surpassing the previous record of 49 degrees set in 1959. This is the last of a stretch of four days with record setting warmth in Portland, Maine. Other temperature records set or tied over the past few days... Date record previous record 17 64 - highest temperature 62 degrees in 1990 18 43 - warmest low temperature 40 degrees in 1968 18 53 - warmest average temp. 48 degrees in 1945 & 1990 19 56 - highest temperature 56 degrees in 1986 /tied/ A cold front will sweep across southern Maine this evening... bringing a quick end to the very mild early Spring weather. A more seasonable high temperature around 45 degrees is expected on Sunday. Though highs will be close to normal tomorrow... it will be around 25 degrees colder than today.
