Forecast for Coastal Cumberland
Updated: 10:15 am EST on November 15, 2009
Rest of Today
Mostly cloudy late this morning...then becoming partly sunny. A chance of rain with patchy drizzle late this morning. Patchy dense fog late this morning. Near steady temperatures in the mid 50s. Light and variable winds. Chance of rain 30 percent.
The National Weather Service in Gray Maine has extended the
* Flood Warning for... Androscoggin County in southwest Maine... southern Oxford County in western Maine... York County in southwest Maine... Sagadahoc County in south central Maine... Cumberland County in southwest Maine...
* until noon EST
* at 639 am EST... National Weather Service Doppler radar indicated that the heaviest rain has exited the warned area. However... some rivers are still rising... while others are just cresting. The runoff from the heavy rain last night is still entering small rivers... creeks and streams... and additional flooding is possible. Also... there is still quite a bit of standing water on roads due to the heavy rainfall.
Precautionary/preparedness actions...
Most flood deaths occur in automobiles. Never drive your vehicle into areas where the water covers the roadway. Flood waters are usually deeper than they appear. Just one foot of flowing water is powerful enough to sweep vehicles off the Road. When encountering flooded roads make the smart choice... turn around... dont drown.
A Flood Warning means flooding is occurring or is imminent. Most flood related deaths occur in automobiles. Do not attempt to cross water covered bridges... dips... or low water crossings. Never try to cross a flowing stream... even a small one... on foot. To escape rising water move up to higher ground.
Please report high water to the National Weather Service by calling toll free... 1-877-633-6772... when you can do so safely.
... Flood Warning extended until this afternoon... the Flood Warning continues for the Presumpscot River at Westbrook. * Until this afternoon. * At 3 am Sunday the stage was 18.0 feet. * Flood stage is 15.0 feet. * The river will continue rising to near 18.3 feet early this morning. The river will fall below flood stage by late this afternoon.
Coastal Flood Statement
Statement as of 4:57 AM EST on November 15, 2009
The combination of a persistent onshore flow... high astronomical tides and strong wave action may result in splashover around the time of high tide this morning.
The strongest onshore winds have moved northeast of the area... but the strong winds Saturday afternoon and evening created large waves across the Gulf of Maine. The strong wave action will continue this morning... even as the winds have diminished.
High tide this morning occurs at 93o am in Portland. The predicted tide at that time in Portland is 10.6 ft... which is well below the flood stage of 12.0 ft. However... the large breaking waves near the coast around the time of high tide could produce splashover... especially in the most vulnerable northeast facing communities in southwest Maine and the sea coast of New Hampshire.
In addition... large breaking waves are expected along the coast from Seabrook to Rockland and Camden throughout the day.
