Areal Flood Warning
Statement as of 10:13 AM EDT on April 16, 2014

...The Flood Warning remains in effect until 345 PM EDT for urban areas and small streams in northwestern Washington...northern Penobscot and Piscataquis counties...

**a Flood Warning means that flooding is imminent or has been reported. Stream rises will be slow and flash flooding is not expected. However...all interested parties should take necessary precautions immediately.**

Although colder temperatures have slowed the snowmelt from yesterday...flooding continues across the warning area. Rivers are still running high from the recent rainfall...and several roads remain closed. These include but are not limited to:

In Piscataquis county:

River Road and Elliot Road in Willimantic Brockway Road bridge in Sangerville pleasant street and River Road in Milo

In Penobscot county:

Half township Road in West Lincoln Main Street in Dexter

In Washington county:

Route 6 near Lambert Lake Route 169 between Danforth and Springfield

Many other roads are either partially or totally closed due to flooding. Please remember...you should never cross a flooded Road. Obey all Road closure signs and do not drive around or move barricades. Persons are urged to stay away from all flooded rivers and streams.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Do not drive your vehicle into areas where the water covers the roadway. The water depth may be too great to allow your car to cross safely. Move to higher ground.

The Flood Warning continues for the Penobscot river at Eddington * from this evening to Friday evening...or until the warning is cancelled. * At 4:30 am this morning, the stage was 13.3 feet * minor flooding is forecast. * Flood stage is 18.0 feet. * Forecast...rise above flood stage by tonight and continue to rise to near 20.3 feet by early afternoon on Thursday. Flooding could occur along Route 2. The river will fall below flood stage by Friday afternoon.

The Flood Warning continues for the Penobscot river at West Enfield * from this afternoon to Friday evening...or until the warning is cancelled. * At 4:45 am this morning,the stage was 14.8 feet * minor flooding is forecast. * Flood stage is 18.0 feet. * Forecast...rise above flood stage by late this afternoon and continue to rise to near 20.2 feet by tomorrow morning. This could lead to flooding of Route 2. The river will fall below flood stage by Friday early afternoon.

The Flood Warning continues for the Mattawamkeag River at Mattawamkeag * until further notice...or until the warning is cancelled. * At 4:30 am this morning, the stage was 13.9 feet * minor flooding is occurring and moderate flooding is forecast. * Flooding was reported along the Bancroft Road between Wytopitlock and Danforth. * Flood stage is 13.5 feet.

* portions of east central Maine...north central Maine... northern Maine...southeast Maine and west central Maine... including the following areas...in east central Maine... central Penobscot...northern Penobscot and southern Penobscot. In north central Maine...central Piscataquis...northern Piscataquis and southern Piscataquis. In northern Maine... northeast Aroostook...Northwest Aroostook and southeast Aroostook. In southeast Maine...central Washington...coastal Hancock...coastal Washington...interior Hancock and northern Washington. In west central Maine...northern Somerset.

* Through this evening

* reports of flooded roads continue as the mild temperatures and heavy rainfall on Wednesday lead to rapid snowmelt with some roads being closed and culverts being damaged.

* Ice had broken up and was moving on the rivers especially the Saint John, Aroostook and Piscataquis rivers. An ice jam remains on the Aroostook River at Fort Fairfield. All streams and rivers continue rise steadily including the Mattawamkeag and Penobscot rivers. Colder temperatures expected today into tonight will slow the rising waters.

* Flooding can rapidly develop in the vicinity of ice jams. Those with interests along rivers and streams should remain alert for ice jams and possible flooding.

You should monitor later forecasts and be alert for possible flood warnings. Those living in areas prone to flooding should be prepared to take action should flooding develop.
