* dangerous flooding to continue across portions of southern New
England
At 155 PM EDT widespread flooding of streams was occurring across
central and eastern Massachusetts... much of Rhode Island... and much
of southern New Hampshire. In some areas... moderate to major
flooding was taking place or is threatening to take place along many
small streams. This is a dangerous situation.
A swath of moderate to locally heavy rain continues to occur across
northeastern Massachusetts and southern New Hampshire as of early
Monday afternoon. This swath of rainfall will gradually shift
southward as the afternoon wears on... eventually affecting
southeastern Massachusetts and Rhode Island with heavy rainfall once
again. Another inch to locally an inch and a half of rainfall may
occur across the warning area by midnight tonight. The rainfall will
gradually begin to taper off and end from north to south late this
afternoon and this evening. However... even if the rain ends in your
area... flooding will continue as copious runoff continues.
Moderate to major flooding is expected on many small streams in
eastern Massachusetts and Rhode Island into this evening. This also
includes southern New Hampshire... particularly Hillsborough County.
Numerous roadways are expected to continue to be impacted... some
possibly at risk for washing out. This is a very serious situation
and calls for extreme caution.
Precautionary/preparedness actions...
Excessive runoff from heavy rainfall will cause flooding of small
creeks and streams... highways and underpasses. Additionally... country
roads and farmlands along the banks of creeks... streams and other low
lying areas are subject to flooding.
A Flood Warning means flooding is occurring or is imminent. Most
flood related deaths occur in automobiles. Do not attempt to cross
water covered bridges... dips... or low water crossings. Never try to
cross a flowing stream... even a small one... on foot. To escape rising
water move up to higher ground.
Do not underestimate the power of flood waters. Only a few inches of
rapidly flowing water can quickly carry away your vehicle.
