Public Information Statement
Statement as of 5:26 PM EDT on March 16, 2010
The following are a mix of official ASOS observations and many unofficial but highly representative observations for the major noreaster of March 13-15 2010.
The axis of heaviest rain was found within 30 miles of eastern Massachusetts coast where record daily rains occurred at 100 year long term climate sites on successive days /14th-15th/ at Boston... and only on the 14th at Worcester and Providence.
Amounts of six to 10 inches occurred within 30 miles of the eastern Massachusetts coast... centered from Boston to its North Shore.
This probably is one of the heaviest late winter/early Spring storms in our area... which also produced floods of record and near record... without the contribution of snowmelt!
A smaller 5 inch rainfall axis was aligned near the Connecticut Rhode Island border.
This storm followed two weeks on the heels of the late February two storm combination event that deposited 2 to 6 inches of water equivalent precipitation in the Interstate 95 corridor of Rhode Island and Massachusetts.
Late winter temperatures prevent the same evaporation rates and soil drying capability of the warmer Summer.
Subsequently... the arrival of possibly the heaviest widespread rain event in eastern Massachusetts and Rhode Island since the Spring rains of may and June 2006 /excluding the tropical related Summer and fall events/... had less available soil and Reservoir storage capacity... and the result... was greater runoff and widespread flooding.
Appreciation is extended to Highway departments... cooperative observers... Skywarn spotters and media for these reports. This summary is also available on our home Page at weather.Gov/Boston
