Statement as of 9:37 AM CDT on July 04, 2009 ... Heat advisory in effect until 7 PM CDT this evening... The National Weather Service in Lake Charles has issued a heat advisory... which is in effect until 7 PM CDT this evening. The combination of high temperatures and increased humidity will generate heat index temperatures of around 105 degrees along the Interstate 10 corridor to near 110 degrees across central Louisiana and interior southeast Texas this afternoon. Temperatures will lower to less dangerous levels by the early evening. Precautionary/preparedness actions... If you plan to be outside... avoid prolonged exposure or strenuous physical activity. Your body can lose up to a gallon of water an hour through perspiration. Drink plenty of fluids to avoid dehydration. Alcoholic and caffeinated beverages can increase the rate of water loss in your body... increasing the risk of heat exhaustion or stroke. Wear lightweight... light-colored... loose- fitting clothing. Wear a hat to shield yourself from the sun... and use a sunscreen to reduce possible sunburn.

Statement as of 5:32 AM CDT on July 04, 2009 ... Hot Fourth of July will turn into wet week ahead... This afternoon... temperatures will rise to the upper 90s to lower 100s in most places. Heat indices will top out in the 105 to 108 range for a few hours. A heat advisory may be necessary. People should take precautions if they plan on being outdoors for any length of time this afternoon. Drink plenty of water. Try to stay in the shade. Take plenty of breaks from physical activities. If you can... go indoors to air-conditioned areas to cool off. A Little Break from the heat is in store this upcoming week. Monday through Friday calls for scattered showers and thunderstorms. Remember the safety rule of thunderstorms and lightning... when thunder roars... go indoors.
