A developing low pressure system will move across the southern Great Lakes this evening and tonight... as a strong cold front exits the area. South to southwest winds may gust to around 45 mph at times through early this evening... with gusts to around 50 mph possible in the highest terrain near the Virginia border.
A Wind Advisory means that sustained winds of 30 to 39 mph... or wind gusts between 45 and 57 mph are expected. Winds this strong may bring down small tree limbs... and can make driving difficult... especially for high profile vehicles. Use extra caution. ... Two EF1 tornadoes confirmed in east Kentucky on may 11th...
A powerful low pressure system brought a line of storms to eastern Kentucky on Sunday morning spawning two confirmed tornadoes and widespread thunderstorm wind damage.
A damage assessment team consisting of National Weather Service employees determined that two EF1 tornadoes touched down Sunday morning. The first tornado touchdown occurred around 9:15 am in Cumberland Falls State Park... just inside the Whitley County line from McCreary County. Preliminary wind speed estimates with the first tornado were estimated to be just above 100 mph. Numerous trees were snapped or uprooted with some of the trees falling on cars and powerlines. A tree also fell on the park rangers cabin. There were no injuries with this storm.
The second EF-1 tornado occurred one mile southeast of Wooton or 3.5 miles east of Hyden in Leslie County. The approximate time of the brief tornado touchdown occurred around 10:27 am. Preliminary wind speeds with this tornado were estimated to be up to 100 mph. Some trees were either snapped or uprooted with one tree falling on a power line. More detailed information on the tornadoes will be available over the next 24 hours.
