Severe thunderstorm activity will persist for the Plains on Sunday as a broad low pressure system continues trekking through the region. The system will move from the Northern Plains and into the Great Lakes, creating two frontal boundaries. The warm front associated with this system will extend eastward over the Great Lakes and into the Northeast, kicking up scattered showers and thunderstorms into Sunday night. At the same time, a cold front extends southward from this system which will move off the Central Rockies and into the Central and Southern Plains. Counter-clockwise flow around this broad system will pull moisture and energy into the Plains from the Gulf of Mexico. This will support moderate to heavy showers and thunderstorms in between these two fronts. This system has a history of severe thunderstorm development across the Northern and Central Plains, thus, there is a moderate risk of severe thunderstorm development with large hail, damaging winds, and multiple tornadoes. These severe thunderstorms will most likely develop across central and eastern Oklahoma, through eastern Kansas, and into western Missouri. A slight risk of severe storm development remains in effect from northern Texas, through southern Minnesota and Wisconsin on Sunday. At the same time, the back side of this system will continue spreading moisture over the Intermountain West and Rockies. This will trigger more showers with isolated thunderstorms over the region through Sunday evening.

Meanwhile in the East, a trough of low pressure slowly moves over the East Coast and maintains shower and thunderstorm activity for the Mid-Atlantic states through the Northeast.

The National Weather Service in Jackson KY has issued an

* Urban and Small Stream Flood Advisory for...
east central Rockcastle County in south central Kentucky...
north central Laurel County in south central Kentucky...

* until 930 PM EDT

* at 321 PM EDT... National Weather Service Doppler radar indicated
thunderstorms with heavy rainfall across the advisory area. Doppler
radar estimated between one and two inches of rain has fallen in
the past 30 min. Another inch is possible through 4 PM.

* Runoff from this excessive rainfall will cause minor flooding to
occur... especially along small streams and near low water
crossings. Some locations that will experience minor flooding
include... Burr... Camp Wildcat... Cooksburg... cruise... Dillon...
donaro... Gauley... hare... Hazel Patch... horse lick... Jep hill...
Lamero... Mershons... Oakley... Pine Hill... Robinet... sinks...
templer... Victory... Wellhope... withers and Wood Creek Lake.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Do not drive your vehicle into areas where the water covers the

... A strong thunderstorm to affect the following counties through 330
PM EDT Sunday afternoon...

   western Jackson...
   southeastern Rockcastle and
   northern Laurel.

At 255 PM EDT... a strong thunderstorm was located near
Livingston... or 9 miles southeast of Mount Vernon... nearly
stationary.

Residents should expect very heavy rain... with rainfall rates between
one and two inches per hour... gusty winds of 40 to 50 mph... frequent
lightning and small hail in these areas.

Dangerous cloud to ground lightning is associated with this
thunderstorm. Take shelter immediately. Remember... if you can hear
thunder then lightning is close enough to be a hazard.
