Weather Summary
Weather Underground Forecast for Friday, February 10, 2012.

Expect active weather to move into the East on Friday, as a trough of low pressure moves from the Southern Plains and into the Eastern Valleys. Flow around this system will pull moisture and energy in from the Gulf of Mexico. This will produce scattered showers and thunderstorms over the Southern Plains and Lower Mississippi River Valley throughout the day. There is a slight chance that these storms will turn severe with strong winds and heavy downpours. The northern side of this system will push a cold front into the Midwest, which will move through the Great Lakes and into the Ohio River Valley. Expect light and scattered snow showers to develop along the front as it passes through northern Michigan and into the eastern Ohio Valley and the Central Appalachians. Warmer temperatures ahead of this system will allow for rain showers to develop in parts of the Mid-Atlantic states and the Tennessee Valley.

Out West, a weak trough of low pressure moves onshore from the Pacific Ocean, bringing some moisture onshore with it. This will produce more rain and high elevation snow showers over the Pacific Northwest. Some of this moisture will stretch southward into northern California, allowing for light rain and high elevation snow showers to spread into the northern Sierras.

Winter Weather Advisory
Mobile & Email Alerts Statement as of 2:43 PM CST on February 09, 2012

... Winter Weather Advisory in effect from 6 PM EST /5 PM CST/
Friday to noon EST /11 am CST/ Saturday...

The National Weather Service in Louisville has issued a Winter
Weather Advisory for accumulating snow and hazardous driving
conditions... which is in effect from 6 PM EST /5 PM CST/ Friday
to noon EST /11 am CST/ Saturday.

* Timing: a mix of rain and snow will overspread the advisory area
during the day on Friday. By Friday evening... colder air will
push into the region resulting in the rain and snow changing
over to snow. The snow is expected to continue Friday night and
into Saturday morning.

* Main impact: as surface temperatures fall below freezing Friday
evening... snowfall is expected to accumulate across the region.
Snowfall amounts of around an inch will be possible across
south-central Kentucky. Snowfall amounts generally north of the
western Kentucky and Bluegrass parkways will likely average 1 to
2 inches.

* Other impacts: the combination of the anticipated snowfall along
with temperatures falling into the 20s Friday night will lead to
hazardous driving conditions across the area. If you have travel
plans for Friday night... allow yourself plenty of time to reach
your destination.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A Winter Weather Advisory for snow means that periods of snow
will cause primarily travel difficulties. Be prepared for snow
covered roads and limited visibilities... and use caution while
driving.

Stay tuned to NOAA all hazards weather radio and your local media
for the latest updates on this winter weather situation.
