Weather Underground Forecast for Saturday, May 26, 2012.

The main weather feature over the nation will be a low pressure system moving off the Rockies and into the Plains on Saturday. Flow around this system continues pushing a warm front eastward, over the Plains and through the Midwest. Expect widespread showers and thunderstorms to develop along this frontal boundary, from the Northern and Central Plains through the Great Lakes. Some of these storms will turn severe with strong winds, large hail, and heavy rainfall. Severe thunderstorms are most likely over Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Iowa. By Saturday evening, the tail end of this system will reach the Northeast, bringing lighter and more widespread showers and thunderstorms to the region.

The back side of this broad low pressure system will continue pulling cool air in from Canada. This will allow for rain showers to turn to snow showers at the highest elevations of the Northern Rockies, Intermountain West, and Central Rockies. At the same time, strong and gusty winds will persist for the southern side of this system. In combination with warm and dry conditions, this will maintain high fire danger for the Southwest and Southern Rockies.

In the Southeast, expect more shower and thunderstorm activity over Florida and the Carolinas as an area of low pressure lingers just offshore. Some areas may see severe thunderstorm development with gusty winds and heavy rainfall.

... Hot Holiday weekend underway...

The first heat wave of the season will arrive just in time for
the long Memorial Day weekend. A strong ridge of high pressure
aloft will provide plenty of sunshine and allow temperatures to
climb into low to mid 90s across most of the region Saturday and
Sunday. While humidity levels will not be as oppressive as mid-
Summer... the moisture in the air will still make it feel more like
the lower to middle 90s Saturday and up to around 100 degrees on
Sunday. The heat may ease slightly on Monday... but many locations
will still exceed 90 degrees.

Those planning outdoor activities this weekend should take
appropriate measures to avoid sunburn and dehydration.
