...Summer 2014 was wet and cool throughout eastern Kentucky..
....August saw very wet conditions across eastern Kentucky...
The end of August marked the end to meteorological Summer. The
Jackson weather office had a mean Summer temperature of 73.5
degrees...which is 0.5 degrees below the normal of 74.0 degrees. The
mean temperature at London was also 73.5 degrees...which is 1.3
degrees below the normal of 74.8 degrees. Jackson and London
recorded Summer precipitation well above normal. The Jackson weather
office finished with a seasonal total of 17.44 inches...which is
4.40 inches above the normal of 13.04 inches. The London Corbin
Airport totaled 15.81 inches over Summer...which is 3.66 inches
above the normal of 12.15 inches. Summer 2014 was the third wettest
Summer at Jackson...while it was the ninth wettest at London.
Both Jackson and London saw very wet conditions during August 2014.
Last month...the Jackson weather office was well over four and three
quarters of an inch above normal...while the London Corbin Airport
was over two and a third inches wetter. In fact...it was the second
wettest August at Jackson...and the fourth wettest August at London.
On the temperature side of the fence...Jackson and London were on
opposite sides of normal last month. The Jackson weather office was
almost one degree cooler than normal...while the London Corbin
Airport was a couple of tenths of a degree above normal.
The National Weather Service office near Jackson finished August
2014 with an average temperature of 73.6 degrees...which is 0.9
degrees below the normal of 74.5 degrees. The average daily high was
82.2 degrees...and the average daily low was 65.0 degrees. The
highest temperature for August was 89 degrees and occurred on the
22nd...29th and 30th. No maximum temperature records were set or
tied last month. The lowest temperature from August 2014 was 55
degrees on the 16th...which set a daily low temperature record.
Additional daily low records occurred on the 3rd with 57 degrees and
on the 4th with 59 degrees. A minimum high record of 69 degrees was
set on the 8th. Even though August averages 4.4 days of 90 degree
temperatures or higher...no 90 degree readings have occurred in
August in the last four years...and only once in the last six
The Jackson weather office received 8.55 inches of precipitation in
August 2014...which is 4.86 inches above normal. This amount placed
last month as the second wettest August on record...only behind the
10.04 inches from August of 2013. Even though 8.55 inches is a large
total for a month...it is only the 14th wettest month ever at
Jackson. There were 16 days when a hundredth of an inch or more of
precipitation was recorded...and 10 days when a tenth of an inch
or more fell. There were five days when at least a half an inch of
rain was received...and three days with more than an inch. The 16
days of at least a hundredth of an inch of precipitation is the
highest August total ever. The day of the 31st netted 1.85 inches of
rain...which was the greatest daily amount for August and set a
daily precipitation record as well. The greatest amount of rainfall
received in a 24 hour period occurred on the 30th to 31st with a
total of 2.16 inches. Additional precipitation records were set on
the 9th with 1.57 inches...and on the 10th with 1.30 inches. The
annual precipitation total is now 38.30 inches...which is 4.75
inches above normal.
Thunder was heard on 12 days at the Jackson weather office...which
is well above the normal of 7.4 days for August. There were 25 days
with fog...14 of which featured dense fog. August normally
averages 7.9 days of dense fog. The average wind speed for August
was 1.2 mph...and the highest wind gust of 24 mph was recorded on
August 22nd. The mean wind speed for August is typically 3.6 mph.
After recording 3 heating degree days in July...there was 0 in
August. This is 2 below normal for the month. The seasonal total
remains at 3...which is 1 heating degree day above normal for the
season. Jackson accumulated 274 cooling degree days last
month...which is 24 below normal. The cooling degree day seasonal
total is now 1001...which is 23 above normal.
At the London Corbin Airport...the average temperature was 75.4
degrees...which is 0.2 degrees above the normal of 75.2 degrees for
August. The average daily high was 84.9 degrees...and the average
daily low was 65.9 degrees. The highest temperature from last month
was 90 degrees and occurred on four days...the 20th....the
23rd...the 29th...and the 30th. The lowest temperature from last
month was 56 degrees on the 14th. No maximum or minimum temperature
records were set or tied at London in August 2014. There were two
maximum low temperature records set last month...73 degrees on the
23rd....and 74 degrees on the 24th.
The London Corbin Airport recorded 6.10 inches of precipitation in
August 2014...which is 2.39 inches above normal. Last month was the
fourth wettest August at London. There were 12 days when a hundredth
of an inch or more fell...and eight days when a tenth of an inch or
more of rain was recorded. London had five days with at least a half
an inch...and one day with more than an inch. The greatest daily
amount was 2.03 inches on the 30th....which set the only
precipitation record last month. The greatest amount of
precipitation received in a 24 hour period was 2.54 inches from the
30th through the 31st.
London had six days with thunder last month. Also...there were 27
days with fog...and five days with dense fog. The average wind speed
for August 2014 was 3.6 mph...with the highest wind gust of 38 mph
recorded on the 6th.
There were no heating degree days at London last month...which is 1
below normal. No heating degree days have been recorded yet this
season...which is 1 below normal. London recorded 331 cooling degree
days last month...which is 14 above normal. The seasonal cooling
degree day total is missing due to a two day power outage at London
