Heat Advisory
Statement as of 9:02 AM CDT on August 21, 2014

...Heat advisory now in effect until 7 PM CDT Tuesday...

The heat advisory is now in effect until 7 PM CDT Tuesday.

* The duration of excessive heat and humidity will continue through Tuesday...therefore the heat advisory has been extended through Tuesday. This is especially important given all the area events...from High School football and soccer games and practices...to state fairs ongoing...that will continue to be conducted during this extended period of excessive heat and humidity.

* Temperatures will continue their heat up through the 90s each afternoon through the weekend and even into early next week. This occurs as high pressure aloft builds into and across the nation's midsection. These temperatures will combine with high humidity to produce afternoon heat index values from 100 to 105 for most locales several days in a row. It is possible isolated locations could see the heat index top 105 at times.

* The combination of hot temperatures and high humidity will create a situation in which heat illnesses are possible. Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside. When possible...reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Wear lightweight and loose fitting clothing when possible and drink plenty of water.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A heat advisory means that a period of hot temperatures is expected. Drink plenty of fluids...stay in an air-conditioned room...stay out of the sun...and check up on relatives and neighbors. Make sure outside pets have plenty of water.
