Tropical Weather: Subtropical Storm Beryl (North Atlantic) Tropical Storm Sanvu (Western Pacific)
Weather Summary
Weather Underground Forecast for Sunday, May 27, 2012. More interesting weather for many parts of the country is expected Sunday. Subtropical Storm Beryl will continue on its path toward the northeast coast of Florida near Georgia. It is expected to make landfall with tropical storm strength winds either late Sunday night or early Monday morning. This storm will not be a signficant wind threat, and the rain associated with it will mostly be a blessing to this region as it has suffered through an exceptional drought.

Elsewhere, an intense heat wave will continue for the Plains and Southeast while also spreading northward into the Ohio Valley and Upper Midwest. Maximum temperature records are most likely to be broken for many areas as temperatures will soar into the 90s and 100s. Even more dangerous will be the heat index values over 100 degrees. The heat index tells you how hot the air feels. The more humid the weather, the higher the heat index will soar. Thankfully, many areas will not experience the extremely high humidity common during the Summer months.

In the West, a strong storm will move through the Northern Rockies and into the Dakotas. This storm will bring widespread rain and even some snow from Idaho through Minnesota. The associated cold front will move through the Plains, possibly instigating some strong thunderstorms that could become severe.

The Northeast will rise into the 70s and 80s, while the Southeast and Southern Plains will see temperatures in the 90s and 100s. The Northwest will rise into the 70s.

Wind Advisory
Mobile & Email Alerts Statement as of 4:07 AM CDT on May 27, 2012

... Wind Advisory in effect from 1 PM this afternoon to 7 PM CDT
this evening...

The National Weather Service in Wichita has issued a Wind
Advisory... which is in effect from 1 PM this afternoon to 7 PM
CDT this evening.

* Timing... strong south winds will overspread the area this
afternoon and continue into the early evening hours.

* Winds... south winds will be sustained between 30 and 35 mph with
gusts to around 40 mph.

* Impacts... drivers of high profile vehicles on east west roads
such as Interstate 70 and Highway 400 will need to use extra
caution. In addition... boaters on area lakes will also need to
use extra caution this afternoon and evening.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A Wind Advisory means that sustained winds of at least 30 mph
and/or wind gusts over 45 mph are expected. Winds this strong
can make driving difficult... especially for high profile
vehicles. Use extra caution.

Record Report
Mobile & Email Alerts Statement as of 1:15 am CDT on May 27, 2012

... Wichita... Salina... and Russell set warmest low temperatures on may
26th...

In Wichita... the low temperature on may 26th was 75 degrees. This broke
the record of 72 degrees set in 1953.

In Salina... the low temperature on may 26th was 75 degrees. This easily
broke the record of 70 degrees set in 1980.

In Russell... the low temperature on may 26th was 74 degrees. This easily
broke the record of 68 degrees set in 1953.

Public Information Statement
Mobile & Email Alerts Statement as of 3:10 am CDT on May 27, 2012

... OH how dry we are...

It has been an exceptionally dry may for central... south-central and
southeast Kansas.

Through the 26th... Salina had measured just barely one quarter inch of
rain 0.26 inch to be exact. This is just 0.01 inch shy of the all-time
mark of 0.25 inch measured in 1966.

Through the 26th... Wichita had measured 0.62 inch... making 2012 the 2nd
driest may on record behind the 0.52 inch measured in 1973.

Through the 26th... Chanute had measured 1.80 inches... making 2012 their
3rd driest may one record. Their driest may occurred in 1988 when 1.66
inches was measured... while the 1.75 inch total measured in 1932 ranks
2nd.

Fortunately... thunderstorms are forecast for each day through the end of
the month with the best chances occurring tonight... Wednesday night and
on Thursday for southeast Kansas. We shall see if the rainfalls will be
sufficient to prevent 2012 from gaining admission into the ten driest
Mays on record.
