A strong low pressure system will bring active weather to the center of the nation on Saturday. The system will move off the Rockies and into the Plains, which will push a warm front into the Northern Plains and Upper Midwest, while it continues pulling a cold front southeastward across the Western states. Counter clockwise flow around this system will pull more moisture and energy into the Plains from the Gulf of Mexico, allowing for showers and thunderstorms to develop from Oklahoma through the Dakotas and into Minnesota. These areas are under a slight threat of severe weather development with strong winds, large hail, and heavy rainfall. Parts of western Nebraska and northwestern Kansas are under a moderate risk of severe thunderstorm development. This area has increased risk for tornado development on Saturday.

East of this activity, a weak trough slowly moves over the Eastern Valleys, allowing for a few more widespread showers and thunderstorms to pop up from the Southern Appalachians through the Mid-Atlantic states. Meanwhile in the West, moisture from the Pacific Ocean will allow for scattered showers with afternoon thunderstorms to persist for the Northern and Central Rockies. Severe storms are not likely in these areas. In the Southwest, gusty winds, warm temperatures, and dry conditions will maintain dangerous fire weather conditions on Saturday.

... Red flag warning in effect from 1 PM CDT /noon MDT/ this
afternoon to 9 PM CDT /8 PM MDT/ this evening for low relative humidity
and gusty winds for extreme southwest Kansas...

The National Weather Service in Dodge City has issued a red flag
warning for low relative humidity and gusty winds... which is in
effect from 1 PM CDT /noon MDT/ this afternoon to 9 PM CDT /8 PM
MDT/ this evening. The Fire Weather Watch is no longer in effect.

* Affected area... fire weather zone 061 Hamilton... fire weather
zone 062 Kearny... fire weather zone 074 Stanton... fire weather
zone 075 Grant... fire weather zone 084 Morton and fire weather
zone 085 Stevens.

* Winds... southwest 15 to 25 mph with gusts up to 35 mph.

* Timing... peak critical fire weather conditions expected from 2
PM until 8 PM CDT.

* Relative humidity... as low as 8 percent.

* Temperatures... in the lower to mid 90s.

* Impacts... fire growth potential will be very high and any
outdoor flames could quickly grow out of control.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A red flag warning means that critical fire weather conditions
are either occurring now... or will shortly. A combination of
strong winds... low relative humidity... and warm temperatures can
contribute to extreme fire behavior.
